Extracurricular Essay Help?

I have a couple questions about the extra curricular essay. First of all, it says it should be 1000 characters. Does that mean with or without spaces?

Also, should the essay be more personal like how the extracurricular has shaped you/meant a lot to you or should it be more strictly about what you actually did in that activity?

Lastly, I'd really like your opinion on which extra-curricular I should write about. I'm trying to decide if I should write it about marching band or a community service group. Marching band means a lot more to me than anything, especially because I'm drum major this year, and I thought I could talk a lot about leadership and whatnot. However, I created the community service club. We have a lot of good values as basis for the whole thing. I feel like this would show just as much leadership and colleges might like this better because it's about volunteering and having positive attitudes and stuff like that. I'm just not sure which one to pick!

Thank you so much for your help!

It’s with spaces. Yes it should be personal. As for the last question, I would just choose whatever you can write better on… Honestly I don’t know xD

If your activity is something like Boy/Girl Scouts, you won’t need to describe your activity too much. You should probably incorporate personal impact into your short answer (after all, that’s what your app is about).

And if marching band means more to you, write about it. Admission officers will see your leadership roles if you list them in the EC section. Don’t worry about that!
