Extracurricular Issue

On and on, I hear about the importance of leadership for a college application. I have about 500 hours of volunteering and I am a member in several different clubs. However, to assume a leadership position, you have to have popularity - a quality that I am almost entirely lack. So, how can I make up for this lack of leadership positions. Should I create a club (I doubt that many people would join though)? Are there any better ideas? All advice is welcomed.

Well if you feel you MUST HAVE a leadership position, then make your own club (on your application you don’t have to specify how many people joined your club so don’t worry about that). All I can tell you is to pursue activities that mean something to you - admissions will be able to detect if you are really passionate about an activity or if you are just doing it to have a good-looking resume. Depth over breadth. Good Luck!

Thanks. Anyone else have any tips?

Leadership isn’t something that is strictly defined by a title. If, for example, you are not officially designated a leader in a particular activity, but others working with you have LOTS of information to talk about in regards to how much you contributed and what you did to help the activity gain more prestige/popularity in your community, colleges will be able to detect that from your app either when you mention some of the stuff you’ve helped organize, or if you get a letter of recommendation from a teacher who has also served as an advisor for said activity. That looks MUCH better than a superficial title.
