Is this good for colleges?

Ah I’m really having trouble with my EC’s…
Speech and Debate- Lincoln Douglas Debate and Group Discussion. I have qualified for states in both these events, and next year (as a Soph) I’m planning to do LD for the National Forensics League. (This year I have enough points to qualify for it, but I think it’s too late to sign up). As of now, I compete in the state circut. I’ve gotten a few awards so far this year in both events)
There’s a good chance that I’ll be captain either Junior or Senior year.

Student Council- I am Secretary of my grade, except since there are elections every year I don’t know if I’ll keep my position for all 4 years.

Tennis- I’ve been playing for about 6 years now, and I’m going to start playing USTA tournaments again around March this year, hopefully. (If I’m not too busy). Also, my goal is to make varsity this year, but if I end up in JV, then next year.

Volunteer work- I am a volunteer at a local Chinese School (Teacher’s Assistant)

Also, I am in a community service club called English Literacy Outreach, which tutors refugees from Eastern Asia in English and other subjects. We had elections early (don’t ask haha) and I was elected to be president in my Junior year.

HOSA- I do this thing called HOSA, which stands for Healthcare Occupation Students of America. Basically you compete in events, go to states and nationals if you place top three.
The event I do is called Human Growth and Development, which basically studies the human life span physiologically, emotionally, psychologically, you name it. States are in April, and because there isnt enough people in HOSA from the state I live in, we only have states, and no regionals or districts. You have to place top three in states to go to nationals.

Ok for those of you who were good enough to read through all of that… Mostly I’m really worried that my ECs are too broad, and don’t reflect a ton of depth. I mean, one thing I really like is speech and debate (however, no guarantees here that I’ll be winning huge awards and whatnot, I just like doing it) and I have (/ will have when Im a junior) decent leadership.

What concerns me is HOSA… It doesn’t really fit in with my other ECs… Another event that I was contemplating doing was Medical Law and Ethics, which would go better with the whole speech and debate and student council thing I have going on. However, its too late to switch events now, (and Ive already started prepping) so if I switch next year to Med Law and Ethics, then there is a really small chance that I will make it to nationals, due to the fact that people usually stick with the same event all 3 years, and that makes it easier for them)

OK sorry for all of this, but basically, I just want some feedback, on my choices of ECs in general, and on anything I can do to make them even stronger for my college apps. I really enjoy all of them, and also I honestly don’t know if next year (soph year) I should switch my HOSA event to Medical Law and Ethics, so then my ECs will fit better into the motto ‘depth not breadth’, even if it would put me at a slight disadvantage… Are my ECs too all-over-the-place? Just assume that I do a decent job in all of them, leadership and competition wise.

Also, I am a female asian, and once more, assume that my grades and scores are the same as the average of the accepted applicants (who are qualified, of course).

Schools that Im shooting for include the Ivies (esp Cornell and Brown), schools like Swarthmore, Amherst, etc etc.

Also, does anyone know the average range of students that compete in States for a HOSA knowledge test?

Almondjoy7
Thanks for the critique!
I’m actually competing at Berkeley this year  I assume you’re in forensics too?
As for the senate internship, the head of the interning program reached out to my high school and I got it that way. I’d definitely suggest contacting your local Senate about it though!

@punstoppable: Of course, no problem! And yay for Berkeley! I hope you do wonderfully. <3 And yes, I am in forensics, my school is actually a pretty top-notch one in the NFL. We’re known easily all around the state. Also thanks for the info about the Senate. I’m going to talk to my counselor about it once we get back, and do some research as well. Your internship was a summer thing, yes?

What do you guys think?
As a guy who doesn’t want Ivies completely out of the question I think my ec’s are underwhelming…

I was also thinking of starting some clubs but as an introvert it’s going to be hard for me to get enough people…

I heard that if you suddenly start a ton of clubs, it makes it seem as if you’re doing ECs for the sake of admissions. I’d suggest picking one and dedicating your last year to it.

I have a question:

So the tutoring club I posted about finally got approved, and we start next week. How should we advertise, run the club, etc.? Thanks.

@ApplesTo

I went through a similar situation as you in the similarly competitive NJ. I’m top of that, I wanted to dedicate more time to other clubs that I enjoyed more such as robotics. My advice is to continue with Forensics, but maybe put it on the back burner for a bit and try out other clubs in the meanwhile. Also, instead of debate, try out other categories like maybe Extemp speech as it requires much less pre tournament work and such. Best of luck!

Can an admin sticky this thread? I think it’d be really beneficial to discuss extracurricular activities in one centralized thread.

Okay here’s an overview of what I have going on (white male junior at 400perclass high school in northeast). These aren’t all my clubs but I only want to include stuff that’s impressive you know?

-Debate (captain next year, Senior year, enrolling my school with Lincoln-Douglas)
-Taking the AMC on the 4th, hope to qualify at least for AIME and hopefully for USAMO.
-Organized a 5k run that raised over $15,000 on my own
-I study languages almost obsessively. By the time I apply I’ll be fluent in Spanish, French, Dutch, Portuguese, and intermediate in Italian and Mandarin. Everything but spanish I’m teaching myself. AP Spanish (5) and AP French (4).
-Environmental Club President (we might qualify for states in Envirothon but I’m not sure yet)

I feel solid, like there’s a lot of reasons they might take me, but there’s nothing that screams SIEZE HIM NOW, you know? Is there anything you think I could do in addition to this? (My AP courseload this year is 14APs, with 9 self studied, so that front is covered).

Applying EA to Princeton in the fall along with some buddies from my school, for context.

Volleyball- Varsity since sophomore year (currently a junior) honorable mention all conference, captain, couldn’t play junior season because I messed up my head in soccer (sucks - wanted to be a scouting prospect) played club volleyball from November - April sophomore and freshman years.

Soccer- varsity since freshman year, started since freshman year, honorable mention all conference as a sophomore (can’t play anymore because of head injury).

Key Club - distinguished secretary award, will be president this upcoming year, attended district convention twice. Over 100 service hours.

National Honor Society - I hope to be on the board this next year.

Part time job - Cashier! Woot.

My main extracurriculars (sports) were kind of taken from me, unfortunately. I used to play sports year round as well as volunteer. I may go out for track in spring, or I will just work and volunteer and do captain arrangements for volleyball. Any thoughts/ideas as to what I can do to improve?

@Snax03

Varsity sports look good, especially you being captain in volleyball. That shows leadership which I think is one of the most important aspects in a good EC list. Other than sports, I think it would be good to get an academic subject focus. Maybe add some more ECs to whatever you are best at in school?

Your ECs look good; sports are obviously your main focus. As Yakisoba said, I’d get at least one or two academic EC to excel in (something you enjoy, of course).

Volunteering - I help teach elementary schoolars math twice a week for an hour each time. I help teach another class English once a week for an hour at a time. Probably will mention some of my stories with them in some of my college essays two years from now.

Honor Society - Applying, and should be a shoe in. I will attempt to land a board position, which shouldn’t be too hard.

Mock Trial - Every single officer is rotating this year, so I will try to become an officer next year. This is probably one of the more fun things that I do.

Mu Alpha Theta - Joined this year, with my first competition tomorrow. I should be pretty good at it, as I have done well in competitions in Middle School, but my school is on a different schedule than the one that the test uses, so I may not know a good deal of the information tomorrow.

Sophomore by the way.

Current Freshman

Speech and Debate – this actually takes a TON of time, and anyone who begs to differ has never done LD. Planning to go on national circuit next year.

DECA – I’m a founder and will be a public relations comissioner for community service projects.

Tutoring – an hour a week, relatively minor.

Pep band – a few hours every few weeks, relatively minor

Scholastic A&W – honorable mention in short story (important b/c I’m a big math person)

Politics-esque Club – I plan to run for president next year for this club
