Most of the schools that I am applying to require one or two recommendation letters. However, I have a professor who knows me very well through the activities that he advises, but I have not had a class with him. It is possible or even advisable to pursue a purely "extracurricular" letter of recommendation?

the point of a LOR is to show different sides of you. they’ll know which classes you got As in based on your transcript. as long as this prof can show them what qualities you possess, he would be a good choice.

I sent in a supplemental recommendation for all of my schools. All of them said they didn’t mind, as long as the recommendation talked about something that the other ones did not necessarily elucidate. These types of recommendations can only help your application.

So, if you feel this professor can talk about you in a way that the others cannot or that he/she can elaborate on things that the others may not know about, you should certainly send it in, in addition to the required amount of teacher recommendations.

Thanks, that’s pretty helpful. If their filling out the common app form, I’ll just ask them to leave the academic stuff blank.

Yeah, I think the CommonApp stuff even has a box that says “cannot evaluate” or something. So, you’ll be fine.
Honestly, in my opinion, I don’t think you need the CommonApp recommendation form because it is specifically for teachers. Some schools have a specific supplemental recommendation form, others who do not would be totally fine with just a letter.
