Extracurricular short answer

I was thinking about writing about community service as my personal statement-I know it's cliche, but I was thinking about writing about how I organized a club's participation in the Komen Race for the Cure. The only problem is, 1000 characters isn't enough room for me to introduce the fact that I organized our participation and also discuss why I did it and why it meant so much to me. Any advice on how I could do both with the limited amount of space?

Should I just not write about this and choose something else?
