EXTRACURRICULARS and Awards that AREN'T RELATED TO MATH OR SCIENCE!!!!

I noticed that a lot of people on these forums are extremely passionate about math and science and have pursued EC's and prestigious national awards, etc. based on this. HOWEVER, I don't like math and science...AT ALL. My real passions lie behind politics and literature and the arts!! So....what are some recommendations for EC's, awards, contests, etc.??? I really need to boost up my EC's this summer and next year if I want colleges to be impressed....any ideas?

:)

Essay Contests

National Peace Essay
All those book essay contests

Anything with debate; campaigning for political causes...and maybe even going abroad for the summer to study (many applications are still open).

Junior Statesmen Symposium on Leadership and Politics: http://summer.jsa.org

I'm doing that this summer! The symposia are only offered in a few states, though.

If you're into politics and rhetoric then join debate/forensics. It's tons of fun.

I'm assuming that you're going to Princeton.

There's also the Junior Statesmen Summer School, but that costs much more. There are scholarships available.

Ughhh, I really wish I could go to a symposia, but unfortunately I don't live in any of those states. >:O

Any other ideas for EC's?

You can travel to them; they are not limited by state residency, just talent. What actual ECs do you have?

kman, do you know of any programs that I can study in Israel? That's where I am going for the summer, it would be nice to do something productive there. :)

Sorry, I don't, but I could find out from any Beachwood student, since virtually all have done so at some point. I focus more on China.

Poetry contests. In CA, Creative Communications will publish just about anything. One kid wrote a poem about a trip to Weiner Schnitzel and got published. Need I say more?

There are a lot of art shows / competitions :) Just google them for your state, hehe - or ask your school art dept.

Actually kman, the Symposium is limited to the 5 or 6 states they have on their website. :/

The EC's I have right now are: Student Govt., Broadcast Journalism, Newspaper, Yearboook Staff, Asia Club VP, various volunteer hours, and Math & Science Club. The problem with my EC's is not only the fact that I don't have that many, but also because they don't really focus on the areas that I am really passionate about - journalism and government. :/
