I am a freshman at Columbia trying to transfer to Penn, Brown or Dartmouth. I had a 3.79 with 5 classes first semester, a 3.9 in high school, 1450 SAT's, and was very involved extracurricularly in high school, but at Columbia I only write for the newspaper and do some volunteer tutoring. Also one of the reasons that I am applying to transfer is because of the lack of student/professor relationships, and I didn't have a first semester teacher who could write my recommendation. Is it okay to get someone from second semester?
And will the extracurriculars this year be a problem?

thats goot for the EC part.
i have never heard of getting a rec like that. if you go for it, do one from the last semester and one from this semester.

i think i remember most of the colleges being rather specific as to the fact that your recommendations should come from 1st semester professors. but i guess you can do as you please. but even if your relationships with your first semester professors sucked/was non-existent, how would your relatationships with your second semster ones be any better?

oh by the way, im applying to transfer to columbia. any other criticisms/compliments of the school?

It's in NYC. That's a compliment.
