Extracurriculars - Questions, questions

Hey y'all,

I'm currently a junior who is kinda worried about how colleges look at ECs. I've been putting together my brag sheet (full-IB so my schedule next year is pretty much all laid out) and I was a little worried about how my ECs would look to college admissions officers. Since I transfered schools end of 9th grade, I went to a totally different (and much bigger) high school, had to make totally different friends, and try out totally different activities while figuring out where the restrooms were and why the principal looks like a ... you don't want to know. Hence, all of my meaningful ECs began 11th grade.

So, to the actual question. Annual Staff is hands down my most important EC, but I was wondering about whether or not it's actually "extracurricular" in the eyes of admissions. Basically, there I do have Annual as a class (application process, of course), but I spend a poopload of time outside of class on it too (Copy Editor + late nights). Sooo... does it count as an EC? If so can I count the time I spend in class? Should I explain it on my brag sheet with a footnote?

Thx.

BTW if anyone else has Qs about ECs, feel free to post.

I am in a similar situation. I moved schools after 9th grade, explored during 10th grade, and started meaningful activities only in 11th. So far I've been accepted to Berkeley (Regent's interview) and Caltech, so I think you'll do fine.

To answer your actual question, most likely I would say go ahead and write it in--after all, things like Newspaper, Yearbook, Orchestra, Choir, Band can be classes, but are obviously extracurricular activities. However, you might consider explaining or elaborating it.
