Extracurriculars that make heads turn

I have noticed that many of the transfer applicants to top schools have high GPAs and are eager to advertise that aspect of their application.

I was wondering what kind of extracurriculars/activities/etc. these people have to set them apart from the other applicants to show their passion, dedication, leadership, etc.

internship at white house.

Hmm... I'm not sure, but would like to know the answer.

I personally was in a musical my first semester at school. It killed 24 hours a week, so it was a giant committment (despite what one might think). This semester I didn't do anything because having rehearsal from 7-11 PM every week day and 10 AM - 2PM+ on saturday killed me. I had no time for any work, except after 11 PM and did most readings inbetween classes. It kind of sucked, so eased back this semester. It seems now I have too much free time.

So next semester (sophmore) I'll do something and hopefully it'll help for transfering (if I do) next year.

i was doing research as a freshman, which i think is pretty commendable, considering most freshman do not step into research positions until later on

Uh, yeah, I'd like to know too...

I'm a mathematics teaching assistant and tutor. I also write for the campus newspaper. And I'm on the crew team. Working on the leadership positions...It really depends on your major. I'm biochem/english, so mine are a little random-seeming.

EDIT:
Geez, the white house...I take it back, forget everything else. Just get an internship at the white house. That'd probably do pretty well.

Are you a research assistant? Because many freshmen in my school have research assistant positions at the Moffitt Cancer Center as internships. However, yeah, those positions are nonetheless praiseworthy; I have much respect for those individuals. Oh yeah and CollegeKid, one word...Damn! I respect you for doing that in your first year in college.

i'm applying as a film studies major

in college:
-i have two jobs on campus: student media assistant at the media center and broadcaster/scheduler at the tv station
- i've had three internships: two summers ago, i was an office intern at a pr/advertising company -- last summer i was an office intern at a small music promotion company and a film intern at at a magazine that wanted to branch out into film/video for animal planet
- various film/drama projects on campus (my main ec in hs was drama)
- various music-related activities on campus
- idk if this is an ec, but i wrote a plan of study proposal so that i can study film at my school (it's not offered as a major) in case i am not accepted anywhere
- volunteer research assistant at psych cognition lab one semester and then the same research but for credit the next semester
- i will intern at the Cannes Film Festival in May

I'm hoping that the combination of my activities will show my passion for film, music, drama, public relations, and the French language. Hoping!

varsity sport and on student government

College:
-President and founder of two clubs: The Philosophical Society and Amnesty International.
-Editor at a Phil. Journal
-Model UN (chair)
-Participant in undergraduate research conference in Boston (pertaining to the following venture)
-Wrote a book, or thesis, or something, my freshman year on the narcotics trade (still not finished); should be about 115 pages when I'm done; right now it's only about 80.
-Phi Sigma Tau
-Some community service (30 hrs)
-Internship at non-profit political organization; I researched the activity of the executive branch appointees (i attribute much of my cynicism to this period)
-Greenhouse worker
-Taking winter and summer courses (not sure if this counts as an EC, but that's what I consider it); overall, I am a second year and have 35 credits from the past summers and winters.

aka, thanks for the respect. It definetly wasn't the smartest idea though. I didn't actually realize what I was getting into, I just thought it'd be fun and I love the show's music. I didn't even have a big part either (but wasn't bad either, I dunno why some people who had nothing parts did it). It just killed me though, so time consuming.

I would love to be a part of the philosophy or psychology clubs here, it sucked never having time to be a part of them :( Next semester I'm doing something though, gotta get more involved because this semester I am on the opposite extreme - too much time.

I work for the Master of Biotechnology program at my university. I'm also a part of the ski/snowboard league, bio and commerce societies. Lots of music playing/performances. But I didn't emphasize everythin great detail, since no room and too lazy to send in CV.

I'm going for an interview tomorrow for a research position in the lab of my uni's V-President/Principal. His research associate really likes me...but that's not to say I'll def get it. Even if I do, apps are in already. lol Oh well.

EDIT
But I think something that'll REALLY make heads turn is if ur dad's the President (not really an EC, but still) or if you were in some major box office hit...Jodie Foster, Reese Witherspoon, Natalie Portman...etc.

member of al-qaeda

yea right some dude was a member of a taliban envoy and only got into Yale's non-degree programs.

sorry, but what's your research about? what do you use to study it? Just curious, I am thinking of doing a project, but don't know how to start, please help :D
thanks

well, u first have to just contact professors, and express interest, for me, it was easy b/c i was a presidential research scholar at cornell, and i told professors this, and they instantly were interested in me b/c they knew i was in a select group, and from there, they become ur mentor, and u spring off them

good luck

Thnaks for the reply by the way, good luck :D

um, for the first few weeks, i was doing basic lab work, but now i am doing my own independent stuff

NASA software engineer and also ran own experiments/studies
Stanford Lab Manager and Research Assistant
Volunteer Teacher through Stanford H.E.L.P

If that don't turn heads, then I'm screwed.

wow.you guys make my company and my macro research look like nothing.
