extracurriculars that nobody has ever thought of

how do college admissions view extracurriculars that are not considered the "usual" and "normal" ones? for example, Dragons & Dungeons club. my school offers common ECs such as MUN, lit magazine, yearbook, programmin club, etc. however, u hav to fill in certain requirements (such as taking a year course durin school time of mun or a semester of programmin) to participate which is ridiculous and i m not willin to take those time-wastin classes since i wanna take aps that i m really interested in. however, i hav to do some ECs and since the ones that exist already have ridiculous policies, i wanna start my own club. and i wanna do creative ones. i find the common ones borin. do college admissions like unique extracurriculars or those common ones?

I think a thread like this has already been posted. And I opted for a “sky-diving club.” That’d be fun.

And I think admissions officers will like anything that is unique; it provides relief for the rather banal transcripts of other “top” students.

How about clam farting?

^ Looooooooooooooooooooooooooool

If it’s a joke club that requires no effort and sounds ridiculous (not saying that any of the aforementioned ideas fit into this category), admissions officers would obviously disregard it and prefer something more authentic, albeit common, like MUN.

Unique extracurriculars are good in general because it’s good to stand out somehow. But petty clubs =/= unique extracurriculars.

If you want to spin an activity like D&D into a club, make sure it’s something fairly popular (that would attract a solid amount of members) and make it something charitable. Like, host D&D tournaments with registration fees and donate the money to a not-for-profit.

And if sky-diving club goes sky-diving regularly and you personally have to organize things, then obviously that shows leadership and that’s great.

I’m not gonna touch the clam farting one. :stuck_out_tongue: Nice CC culture reference.

Well I’m in the Ping Pong Coalition.
Lol.
We were going to make shirts that said “YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE ASIAN, BUT IT HELPS,” but uh, the school wouldn’t approve them. Lol.
I think the approved ones say, “THIRD MOST POPULAR BASEMENT ACTIVITY” and I have no clue how that got past the admin. lol.

There’s a TV drama club at my school - basically, all you do is watch TV dramas such as House, Grey’s Anatomy, OC, etc. I guess that’s pretty unique, but it’s not a totally worthwhile EC.

Haha, we have a “Philosophy Club.” Although the Board of Ed thinks it’s mostly a debate club, we usually watch reruns of South Park during the meetings and listen to the club’s president talk about contemporary topics. It’s a great deal of FUN!

Unique ones are essentially the same as seemingly “non-unique” ones: if you haven’t made an impact, are significantly involved, made contributions, etc, by common sense it probably won’t matter. It’s only interesting and refreshing when it’s actually worth something and (maybe) a lot of your time, something you care about.

For me that’d be games and a host of things related to games. Probably one of the most stigmatized and underrated thing ever. The stuff/rumors that come along with it are totally hogwash. Also listening to music, sleeping a lot, and eating a lot, and exercising?

That’s all of my EC’s I had/have…

lol…dragons and dungeons.

Indoor fishing, upside down hiking, synchronized ice sculpting

our school has the Coalition of Socialists.

and the Qudditch Club— which actually has practices. LOL.

^ Quidditch Club?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I want that!!!

But then again, I am the biggest HP fan ever.

LOL. Clam Farting!

Lol at Clam Farting. That’s a classic. And does the quidditch team actually run around on brooms?

…Am I missing something here about “Clam farting”?

I thought it was one of those pseudo-I’m-so-kewl-with-Harry-Potter-style-knowledge-esque things.

There was this thread a while ago in which a girl accidentally put “clam farting” on her college app to a very top Ivy school. lol and she got in

The ECs that weigh the apps most heavily are those that can benefit the school the most. That is why an athletic recruit is considered so valuable.

I was just reading the clam farting thread, and Invoyable, you actually posted in it a couple months ago, congratulating the OP! How could you have forgotten? :p

hpa10:

Yes, they actually run around on brooms. I think they assign people to play the Snitch, bludgers, etc. I think my friend, who is the TALLEST person i know, got assigned the Snitch. (i think they randomly draw their positions out of a box or something)
