@IvyReject3 MIT and Northeastern both deferred me, and GATech hasn’t sent out decisions. I accidently applied regular for Umass even though I submitted the application before November, so I haven’t gotten that decision either.
I’m now applying to Columbia, Brown, Cornell, Harvard, UMichigan, RPI, WPI, BU, Tufts and Olin.
Did you get into UMass? Most of those schools seem like reaches except for RPI,WPI, BU, NeU but overall you have a solid chance for atleast two or three of those
Oops I realized you applied regular for Umass @YomanAwe
@IvyReject3 we’ll see what happens. If it comes down to one of the four safety schools you mentioned, I’ll probably take a gap year to develop my business, then attend those schools and transfer up after sophomore year while continuing my gap year business, if possible.
Wow cool! What kinda business are you planning to develop? Sounds like a good plan
It seems it would be a little sad for you to end up at UMass Amherst, RPI, or one of your other safeties. You seem like a bright kid who is doing a lot of cool stuff for a high school student. Cooler stuff than I did.
Why is your GPA so bad? High school is pretty easy man
Depends on which high school you go to, @YomanAwe is your high school rigorous? Schools like UCLA check for rigor in the high school courses because they use a 4.0 system.
Is it going to be a VR business? @YomanAwe
I definitely think that you will get into some of your desired schools despite what other commenters are saying. I am sure admissions officers will be smart enough to see that your ECs are beyond impressive so that your shaky GPA is inconsequential. Plus you get near-perfect SAT scores so you definitely meet standards for academic rigor!
I go to UC Berkeley, and they do take a holistic approach to applications and I definitely think you can get in- but I would apply undecided rather than CS since CS is competitive and you can declare it once you’re in anyway. But I definitely think you are a prime candidate for their prestigious business undergrad school!
Whatever happens, you have a bright future ahead of you with everything you’ve already accomplished and will continue to do. And not alot of high-schoolers realize this, but university prestige really is not everything. You are better off getting a good GPA and accomplishing things at your full potential at a less prestigious university than you are at a more prestigious uni getting lower grades and getting involved less b/c of grade deflation and heavy competition.
Thanks for your comments everyone
Since my last update, I was rejected from Georgia Tech and Olin College. I guess grades matter more than what most people think. That or my essays were terrible
@IvyReject3 @ChiefUnity3D I could continue making websites for small businesses, go into VR/AR, or try my hand at some mechanical work. I’ve always wanted to make unique drones. I could also try seeing how drones can work with more niche applications of modern society for much cheaper prices than the market currently allows. We’ll see.
@carolinahbrahh Thank you for your kind words
I’ve never done well in school because, until high school, teachers were simply unable to challenge me. I read fiction books under my desk in class and never studied, but I cruised until 9th grade just fine. I never developed study habits or a work ethic. The rest of it, however, is my fault. I just never cared about school and never wanted to put in work doing mundane homework when I could be coding or preparing for debate. I made terrible decisions and I regret them deeply. And now, I’m paying for it.
@vivoazzuro1 Thank you too for your kind words! I hope you’re right. I applied to UC Berkley a long time ago, and I had unfortunately declared as a CS major. One of the main disadvantages of being a first generation immigrant - my family knows nothing about the correct decisions to make in the college application process.
I love to hear that I might do well at UC Berkley. If decisions don’t work out in my favor, I’ll probably send a transfer application their way.
I agree with what you said about university prestige. However, there’s one point I always bring up which is pretty niche and doesn’t apply to most people. I’ve worked at a few startups, and when talking to their CEOs, they all say that their alma mater is one of the biggest things that’ll get them an investment or a research grant. An MIT graduate simply carries more weight in that world compared to a UMass graduate, even if their CS programs are both insanely good. That being said, I totally understand your point. Thank you again for your kind words.
I think you’re taking prestige too seriously. Yes, where you goes matters. However, not as much as you think. I think when these ceos say that their alma mater got them a grant or something, they mean the connections they made as a student there and not the name itself. College is what you make of it, and you can make connections anywhere if you’re smart and strategic.
@YomanAwe listen to @jennacwa, thats your best hope, your looking for label when you dont have much academically to prove except your test scores. Umass has top CS program in the country, if you dont get into Umass then your in a bad state. But since I think you can get in, finish up your studies there and then work your ass of to get into a solid grad program at like MIT, Berkeley, or wherever that you find your prestige.
