Ok, so, honest as I am, I put all the EC's that I've ever done on a resume. All my hard work is on this one sheet. Well, what happens when other, dishonest people, make up a resume that's better than mine? Is there anyway that that person will get caught? Do colleges check? Or is it honors system?

I believe they select a handful of random students to show proof of their ECs. I think for the UCs it's like 10%.

sometimes you hear stories of multiple people from the same school claiming they held a certain position. the admissions office calls the school > auto-reject.

i think most people who embellish (like putting an extra year on, saying they worked 10 hrs. instead of 5 hrs. p/week) don't get caught, though.

and those rarely make a difference.

Yea, I mean seriously. The big things that can be checked like if you were a Lt. Governor for Key Club or not can be either googled or found by calling guidance. Hours are impossible to catch and don't really matter unless you put a million hours down like 40 h per week 600 weeks per year or something

Hours do count for volunteering because they can still check that.

Said it before and I'll say it again:

If it's worth putting down, they'll probably check it out.

everyone adds extra hours and week. Its normal, just don't add clubs your not in or leadership positions your not in since that can be easily verified, hours can't be...

Yeah...but how can they verify clubs. I.e. my school has no method of telling them what clubs we were in.

at my school the adcoms would call the guidance office, who would contact the club's advisor/sponsor, who would know everyone in leadership. wouldn't it work the same way in yours?

verifying clubs is really rare, though. people probably do get away with making up clubs and leadership positions.

Its not worth it. First off that is a big lie that if ever discovered will get you kicked out, unlike lieing about hours which won't matter. Also its a big lie, can you deal with that personally? I mean making up a club your in is so easy to find out...its just stupid

how abt for internationaL STUDENTS??

^ Call costs would add up :D

i doubt they have time to call to be honest

Wow...

Don't lie. On any application. Ever.

Sure, use good descriptors and sell yourself well and all that jazz. But claiming 10 hours when you did 5 is a flat out lie, and it's wrong. Ditto obviously to making up clubs, leadership, anything and everything.

I bet that many kids get away with cutting corners and cheating and embellishing to the point of lying.

And if people get in the habit of lying on applications, it can definitely come back to bite them. Maybe they get away with it, maybe they don't. But if they get caught, there is just about zero tolerance and that person is probably immediately booted out of wherever they are. Even past application lies can catch up with you.

That's a really strong reason right there, and should be reassurance that people who lie on applications do get caught. If someone finds out you lied on an application, even it was years and years ago, you're pretty blacklisted pretty quickly.

But honestly, you're better than that and you know it, so don't degrade yourself. As for others, eh, they'll get theirs, no worries.

Lol ya I'm honest...I can't live with dishonesty. But I'm saying, do college admissions officers actually check?

Prob. is most people doing EC's don't track how many hours they do, so you have to realize the whole thing about "10 hours" whatever is a complete guess. Though there is a big diff. and you have to be able to notice if you just did 5 hours or if you did 20 hours. But honestly, unless you're a college whore, you aren't tracking hour by hour your ecs

guys what if your EC's aren't in-school? :s and what if you have work experience but the place closed down? (no contact info either :s)

Unless everyone from that workplace died, then if they ask have ur former boss ready to contact

Don't worry about claiming something that is true but that can't be verified. If they try to verify it but can't, the worse that will happen is that they will ask you more about it. But if they try to verify something, and find you've lied about it, you've got big trouble. And if you get away with a lie, you still have your soul to worry about.
