There’s this girl who does almost every single club in my school. She says it’s important to have many extracurriculars. My issue is that I thought we were supposed to have a main focus. Like doing too many random clubs would be fluff to college admission boards. I heard colleges like if you excel in one thing in addition to doing well in school. I don’t exactly know what to do. I really need some advice since this is the last year before college admissions start to look at applicants. Currently I do newspaper, yearbook, math club, in a community service group for my town, tennis and tutor little kids in Spanish. I also won third place with my group for website design in history day for my state. Any advice would help, I just need a little guidance please.
I can totally relate to you! There are many mixed reviews out there about the amount vs the quality of the extracurriculars that you do in high school. If there is one thing that really stuck with me through researching the topic, it is that colleges want a well rounded CLASS, but not necesarily well rounded STUDENTS. Basically, they are looking for a variety of people, all with something different to offer, not a bunch of students who are okay at everything. From what I know, you have the edge up on the girl who simply does every club. I think it sounds like you have a great list of meaningful activities! If I were you, I would keep putting my focus on those. Demonstrating that you are comitted to your extracurriculars (and maybe even going above and beyond just participating) if far more importiant than signing up for as many as you can just for credit. Colleges see right through that attempt to “look good” Keep working hard and giving geniune effort, and I belive that you should do just fine!
You’re not “supposed” to do anything. Just keep doing what you enjoy, and try to excel at those things. Students who have 100+ extracurricular activities may seem more competitive, but those EC’s mean nothing unless they demonstrate passion in their applications.
Thank you so much! Your advice really helps and I truly appreciate it!!
