Okay, I don't quite understand this business with ECs. Do you put them down yourself on a college application, or does your school have to authorize them or something and put them on your transcript for you?

And I'm not really sure what to do about this year. I have a job, but it might interfere with extracurriculars I might join. So, I was wondering, does a job look better on a college app than an extracurricular?

I mean, I feel like such a hyprocrite, joining stuff just for college. I've volunteered (library) too, and I am trying for a internship or to volunteer again at a museum, since I am going for anthropology/history.

Start an EC. You'll figure out a way for it not to interfere with your job/school. I don't know for most schools, but for UCs you just tell them your ECs. I'm a senior now and I pretty much haven't done any volunteering. I did maybe 20 hours summer before junior year and I just started again a few weeks ago (I've done about 6.5 hours since then). Yes, AWFUL........so pick up an EC.

A job is an extracurricular - just relax. Admissions folks know how to add up hours/week and see that you don't have time for a job, ECs and to keep your grades up.

Colleges would rather see you participating in ECs that you are strongly interested in, not just for the sake of listing ECs on your application. Doing volunteer work or an internship at a museum would be an excellent EC for someone with your interests. You might try to seek out some other academic or EC opportunities that also relate to your interests but that won't interfere with your job, even things like participating in a history competition, that will help to demonstrate a strong interest in the area you plan to study but also show motivation beyond just going to class.
