Extracurriculars

Hey, I'm a sophomore in my high school, and I was wondering: How many ECs should I have to look good on college apps? I do sports for all three seasons, but thats it so far. I don't do anything besides that yet, because I have two siblings and my parents are too busy picking them up, and working, so I don't have time for practice, and clubs at my school. Am I screwed, or will it still look okay if I start loading up next year and my senior year, since I will be able to drive myself to and from school then?

As many as you want to. There is no magical number of EC’s required to be admitted to any college; they’re ultimately interested in what you love doing best, and I’m sure they’d understand once you explain your family situation. You could potentially address it with your counselor, or mention it in the ‘Additional Info’ section of your app…

For the more/most selective colleges demonstrating a passion that takes you outside of high school academics strengthens your application. That passion can be theater, or music, or sports, or … the list goes on. Best is for you take that passion to a “high” level, and it becomes a true part of your high school life.

Having a list of ECs doesn’t hurt, but having one that you truly love can make a difference. So find that passion, and invest in nurturing it.

Thanks, I am really dedicated to my sports, in fact, I won the Most Dedicated award for my team for all 3 seasons my freshman year. But do sports count as ECs, or do I still need to find something else?
