I am a transfer student trying to decide between UCLA and UC Berkeley for Poli Sci...
I am EXTREMELY Conservative. Would I survive at UC Berkeley? Would UCLA be a better fit for me?

the poli sci department is very, very liberal. the teachers are more measured but the students are rabidly progressive. if you enjoy constant debate and such, then sure, go there…but i’m liberal myself and they still irritated me. i’d say it’s a risk of them doing the same to you.

I’m pretty sure UC Berkeley and UCLA’s political science departments aren’t going to be that far apart in terms of ideology.

@BlahBlah777: are we talking about Berkeley?
and ya debate is fine with me, i go HAM! but idk if i would like it every second of the day…

yes, berkeley. there is a college conservatives group there but i found them also to be very extreme. as a moderate, the level of extremity on both sides was off-putting to me. it did not facilitate any sort of rational debates or compromises that i ever saw.

I would probably fit in with the college conservatives group…
but do you think it would be an uncomfortable situation for me to go there? also, ive lived in southern california my entire life so the norcal change would be a lot different from what im used to…would you suggest UCLA?

if you want to hang out with a group that shares your beliefs, then sure, go to Cal and join college conservatives. personally i think that college should be about making friends and spending time with people with different opinions, and exposing yourself to their ideas. if you are interested in leaving the “extremely conservative” bubble, or at least learning about the world outside of it, then in my opinion it would be easier to do so at ucla, because you would get a more diverse and measured response. berkeley has a very strong liberal tradition and everyone knows it.

@Blahblah777: I appreciate your insight!

^^not everyone who may have a different opinion than you are going to be a jerk about it.so I think you’ll be fine

@lawlking: ya its not like i push my opinion on ppl, i couldnt care less if people disagree with me. I dont force my opinions on anyone, there is no point in that. i just dont want to be attacked for having opinions different than the majority…

extremely conservative as in you support slavery?

im a lib but i love talking to conservatives because we can have very long arguments. never a dull moment

i can’t understand anyone declaring themselves as an “Extreme conservative” or joining any political party in this country for that matter. i don’t think either UCLA or UCB would be thrilled to have you. or any other PUBLIC SCHOOL. you should be in a private institution, right? since public school is on the chopping block by even the most moderate of conservatives. the irony is stunning.

@chewbacca you are so smart! and as i recall you are just out of high school? gotta love evolution man. smarter by the second.

Yes chewbacca, Chargers25 definitely supports slavery in the year 2012.

I am so annoyed by anyone who goes around with pre-conceived notions about people and their political interests. And you, out of all people – a poli sci major – should learn some friggin’ tolerance!

You should go to UCLA and leave us bears alone.

By the way, I’d be considered a conservative and I’m super excited about Berkeley. I’m going to get a great education and meet awesome people. The last thing I want to worry about is the “what ifs”!

What exactly constitutes extreme conservatism? Are we talking zero taxes, nullification of the commerce clause and abandonment of the electoral college, and the right to bear RPGs and SAMs (provided they aren’t made in a former Soviet satellite state or Russia), or simply listening to way too much Rush Limbaugh?

And right, the irony in attending a public institution… lol

And it should be noted, anything prefixed by “extreme” that isn’t also sponsored by a major energy drink manufacturer and enjoys Travis Pastrana as a prominent spokesman is probably ■■■■■■■■…

I went to both schools (Cal Undergrad, UCLA graduate school) and each has a lot to offer. However, if you’ve lived most of your life in So Cal, why not take a chance and move out of your comfort zone a bit? If you’re truly interested in poli sci, it’s a great time for you to branch out and gain exposure to people who are not like you and do not think like you. Good luck…

Apparently, some on this forum cannot detect sarcasm
looks at Grimes99 and northbeach
look up patrick lanzo. yea, there are still people that believe in slavery in 2012. 99.99% of them are conservatives.
not saying the thread starter is one of them, as you most could tell, my original post was sarcastic.

^ hey, wait, you mean we don’t get slavery in 2012!? i want my money back.

irony thy name is ignorance.

Just wanted to pop by and say their is no link between conservatism and slavery. And if you wanted to make that argument, I’d just like to encourage some reading of the mid 1800’s and the different policies the parties had. (And it’s tough to detect sarcasm on a web board unless it’s over the top).

As to the OP, I would encourage you to stretch yourself. I am a junior and have changed my political views seemingly every six months as I learn more and more. Try it, it’s good for you. Just remember the point of a democracy is to convince others of your stance, not browbeat them into submission.
