Extreme Hazing at UVA

Does it matter? Michigan could use those two and they will get 2 years out of one of them. They probably had the grades to match.

For the 14’-15’ UVA season Kyle was originally listed as a senior. So he is doing his senior year over at Michigan? Thinking he did not leave voluntarily.

He is probably a fifth-year (redshirted) senior at Michigan.

It reads bad and embarrassing because it is. Yes, the first years’ health and safety was endangered by the experience - eating live goldfish, being pushed off of chairs, having glass thrown and broke, and being locked in a room while being expected to drink large amounts of alcohol.

If he did in fact complete 4 years at UVA why would he do a 5th at Michigan? He was described as the “ringleader” in the complaint.

I agree with the alcohol portion, if it was true that they were not let out without drinking it all.

HarvestMoon,
I am not familiar with swimming in particular, but it is common in D1 sports for athletes to sit out of competition for a year, usually freshman year, to adapt and develop. Then they will do 5 years at the college, sometimes earning a masters degree in the 5th year.

The complaint is not clear on Marcantonio and the alcohol. He was definitely in the bathroom with the others but it was stated elsewhere in the complaint that Marcantonio “was not a drinker”. Seems the prune juice and milk was a punishment for him not drinking in the bathroom but the complaint never states how they knew he didn’t drink his share.

I am going to go slightly off topic for a post or two.

Did anybody see the following video of a former FSU quarterback? He was just kicked off the team. The quarterback did not the the first punch but wow. He was arrested on a misdemeanor charge.

I wonder if there is anyone on CC who will admit to doing an elephant walk. It’s just so gross.

“Michigan can use those two.” Agree, but most coaches are wary of athletes with known discipline problems. And, now that there are actually legal charges against these two players (unlike just the suspension when they were picked up by Michigan), that is a big distraction.

Two of the other guys did continue to compete for UVa after the suspension was up (Jake from Oklahoma and Charlie from NY). The only one who seems to have not continued with swimming is David from SC .

The plaintiff at NWU would have the same big distraction.

I agree about the plaintiff- It will definitely be a distraction for him as well. Charlie’s sister also swims for UVa. Kyle’s ’ brother is going to swim for Stanford. So, at least a couple of these kids come from “swimming” families. I am not at all familiar with swimming but the survey that says that swimming is one of the sports that tends to have more hazing was interesting. Does anyone have any insight (or insider knowledge) as to why that might be?

I doubt many coaches would give up the opportunity to add two guys that will be the top two in the backstroke for the college - both these guys swim faster in their event than the current guys on the UofM roster. UVa had a really good program. UVa punished them, Michigan is probably happy to pick them up now. I’m sure the UofM coach would have expressed reservations if the coach had any issues with the kids’ baggage. And Bay is right - the Northwestern coach is in the same situation - picking up a good albeit younger less seasoned swimmer with his own baggage.

If the case goes forward, the plaintiff has the burden of proof. He is probably going to have to subpoena and take the depositions of all first years who were present. They most likely won’t be happy about that.

I don’t know what kind of baggage a guy has who doesn’t want to participate in elephant walks, watch somebody defecate, get locked in a bathroom with excessive alcohol, take verbal abuse etc.

I think a lot of us men must have baggage too.

I thought she was referring to pursuing the lawsuit as his baggage. But you are right dstark, the plaintiff has essentially admitted to severe emotional injury, and that is a type of baggage too.

That’s fine. I don’t blame him.

Probably not.

The plaintiff will probably have to depose the UVA coach as well, to prove the contract interference claim. He probably will not be happy about having to describe the details of his inability to keep his team functioning properly.

I would guess that is true too.
