Extreme Hazing at UVA

Just catching up on the past 10 pages in thread. I have to admit I really liked the linked article about opinions

I just saw this posted. A year before the case comes to trial, so quite far in the future!

Seems that all 5 defendants retained separate attorneys. Thought there was a possibility that they would initially mount a united defense until it became apparent there were conflicting interests.

It’s going to be tough in that jurisdiction to find a judge that does not have ties to UVA. And although the university is not a party to the suit, clearly the publicity of this case would be best avoided. So I bet there will be a lot of pressure for the parties to settle up.

UVA is not a defendant, so judge having ‘ties’ to the university will not be an issue. The suit is in federal court, so if the defendants have an issue with perceived unfairness, they can try to transfer the case to another jurisdiction.

Right but my point was that the publicity of a trial would hurt the university.

The UVa Board is holding a special closed meeting on an unspecified “legal matter.”

Well that could be any of numerous things.

I missed this news. The case was settled recently. http://www.dailyprogress.com/news/local/uva-swim-team-hazing-lawsuit-settled-but-both-sides-still/article_04d1b7ea-f5d2-11e5-9de8-cb3fd1140569.html
