Extremely important question!!

My friend applied a week ago to PSU university park for the fall semester he had a 3.4 gpa and 27 on the act. He got denied admission today.

I applied october 13th to PSU university park for the summer semester with a 3.2 and an 1830 sat and alumni to the school.

The only things i have that set us apart is the summer semester application and alumni, why was he rejected so early and i haven't heard anything yet, and should i now expect a rejection because i'm getting very nervous since this is my number 1 choice for school

Pretty weird he was denied this early…

Was the 3.4 his weighted gpa?

did your friend apply for one of the more competitive programs, like engineering or business?

Your friend might have applied to more competitive programs, like pamom mentioned. Also, if your friend had a poor behavioral/disciplinary record, that may have earned him a rejection too. A few years ago, someone from my school was rejected because their guidance counselor wrote a bad recommendation (ie. they had a very high SAT and GPA but was caught cheating in school – PSU is looking for integrity as well). Since you applied pretty early, and assuming that you do not have these issues, you should be fine. Also, I have heard checking off summer session should help. Good luck!

@jul247 My school does not differentiate between weighted and unweighted gpa so im not entirely sure.

@pamom59 I’m not entirely sure if he did specifically apply for the engineering program but i do know that he was interested in some kind of engineering so there is a good chance.

@Bubblyperfection He was one of my best friends so i know for a fact he had no poor disciplinary records.

this was such a weird scenario, i do remember reading his essay which was sub-par. Could that be a reason to reject him that early because i know penn state doesn’t even require an essay.

also i’m sending my first marking period grades of my senior year in which i did better than ever and finished the marking period with a 3.92 GPA. Do you think this major improvement could help me out a lot?

Penn State does not look at senior grades at all.
Also, they said the essay will most likely not hurt you, only help you.

Was your friend trying for a competitive major like engineering or nursing, because there are a set number of spots that can be filled. Other majors have lower admission standards. He SHOULD call ad see if he can be considered for undecided or open major.
