extremely lost

I go to a expeditionary school with about 300 students. The problem is they give you no preparation at all. They don't show you your GPA unless you specifically ask a teach to open up their computer and check. One teacher told me that we didn't have GPA's at all. My school only has one or two clubs and only one sport (ultimate Frisbee???)

I'm a sophomore and he only AP class they offer is AP Environmental Science, and that's reserved for Juniors.

I would like to be a Biomedical/Mechanical Engineer (not sure yet). I was wondering are there any programs I could join that doesn't involve your school? I have absolutely no extracurricular's right know.

This summer I was thinking of doing RABS and taking a pre-calc course so I could take calculus Junior year.

The summer after Junior year I was thinking of doing an enrichment program at MIT and maybe research with a professor.

For the club thing, you could found your own club (maybe even science club or something that would pertain to your major of interest) so you may display leadership in that area. If you do create a science club, it would show colleges your passion for seeking out what you’re interested in even when your school offers none.

There are things you could do that involve your community rather than your school specifically. You could raise a large sum of money for a charity you’re passionate about and invest a lot of time into that… or you could create a non-profit and raise your own money. I was going to say fill your summer with enrichment programs, but you’re already on top of that.

Another way to get AP credit is to self-study classes. While Biology and Physics are hard to self-study, they provide a really good foundation for biomedical/mechanical engineering.

And finally, while most top colleges like to gather students who are extremely involved, they also look at your application within the context of your school. They understand that you won’t be able to take 7 AP’s your senior year if your school only offers one. This is actually more beneficial for you if you take the time to pursue what you’re interested outside of school because it really shows that you have passion and you’re not just doing things to look good on your resume.

Best of luck to you!

thank you :)

In my junior year I have one free block and decided to stop taking a language so I would have two. I was thinking about taking a college class and a Robotics and Precision Machining class at the technology school connected to mine.

but I’m afraid I won’t have that many things to put on my application. It seems like everyone on this website has it all figured out.

CC is a really skewed perspective on college applicants. Most people do not have their crap totally together (sometimes including those who seem to based on CC posts  ). Colleges can’t penalize you for not taking advantage of opportunities that don’t exist. candidcrocodiles has some solid advice, and I think the robotics class also sounds like a great idea!
