I have a 3.4 GPA and want to see what colleges I can get into. Now ive looked up the average GPA for all these schools. But I'm not sure what to follow because ive taken the hardest classes my school gives, but just have a slightly lower gpa. so i actually have no idea what i should do. Im just soo worried im not going to get in anywhere, and it's been eating at me for a while, so PLEASE help me. here's my stuff:

---SATs---
SAT: 2330 (800 math, 750 reading, 780 writing)
SAT II Math II: 780
SAT II Biology: 780

--ECs--

Okay, so here's my situation. I'm in IB Diploma and have never taken anything lower than an honors class. My GPA is around 3.4, and weighted its above a 4.0. However, I'm just worried because everyone I know has over a 3.5 and they're all applying to the same colleges as me. So I was just wondering if you could tell me the chance that I could get into these schools - I know, Ive done my research and looked up the average GPAs of all these schools. But I have taken the hardest classes possible that my school has to offer.

So, I want to major in economics. What do you think my chances are of getting into these schools:
- University of Pittsburgh or Penn State (i live in PA)
- NYU (early decision)
- Boston University (early action)
- University of Miami
- Case Western Reserve
- Emory
- Tulane
- CMU

I don’t like to give false hope, but I think that with the exception of NYU and Emory, you are in very good shape. Even at these other two, you look like a very good candidate.

University of Pittsburgh or Penn State (i live in PA) MATCH

NYU (early decision) HIGH MATCH

Boston University (early action) MATCH

University of Miami MATCH

Case Western Reserve MATCH

Emory HIGH MATCH

Tulane MATCH

CMU HIGH MATCH

Are you really sure you want to do ED at NYU?
You have a shot at some reach schools such as NWU, WUSTL, Chicago.

I’m assuming that you are not interested in LACs? (Amherst, Williams, Wesleyan).

Are you sure I’m a high match for those schools? with a 3.4 gpa? isnt that too low? I would’ve actually thought that NYU would be my reach school. or am i wrong? No, I’m not really interested in LACs. Also, does anyone know if it’s hard to get into Pitt with grades like this? because that’d be one of my top choices (after nyu)

Your SAT scores are extraordinarily good, that will help a lot. And even though your GPA is not as high as many of the kids you would be competing against, it consists solidly of A’s and B’s, there are no C’s (or worse) blemishing your record. Also, it seems clear your school does not do + and -, because if they did I think it is obvious you would have a number of B+'s and that would have raised your GPA. Couple all this with the challenging loads you took and the IB, and the SAT’s I already mentioned, and I think you do have a shot at some of these reach schools like WUSTL, Vandy, Rice. Your chances at Pitt, Tulane, Miami, and CWR are good. Emory and CMU more like WUSTL. A chance certainly, but somewhat less so. No guarantees at any of them of course, admissions is a funny thing expecially with a slightly unusual record like yours. But If you apply to about 6 schools in that Tulane tier and 6 in the Vandy/WUSTL tier, you will almost for sure get into at least half in the former and you might get some nice surprises in the latter. Nothing to lose anyway, except a few $$. Of course all this assumes good recs, and that money is not an issue.
