Extremely Nervous and Apprehensive Sophomore

So I did not do as well i as I would have hoped this last year and ended with a 3.429 gpa and if i get straight A's this year as a Sophomore I will end with a 3.771. My issue is I want and am going to go to a foreign country next year, my junior year as an exchange student for the whole year. Therefore my GPA there will not count for anything and i will be stuck with the 3.771. Are there anyways that I could take classes other that at my school to raise my Gpa because i am looking at the University of Wisconsin Madison and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. I know UNC is a long shot but any suggestions to raise my gpa. Also how much of an impact will mystudy abroad help in terms of being accepted. Thanks

In terms of your GPA, I believe most colleges take into account your transcripts more. So if you do well next year then colleges will consider the improvement. Studying abroad could help you stand out to colleges; be sure to write about the experience in your essays and include what you learned etc.

Good luck!

Depending on your school’s GPA calculation policy, you might consider taking community college or online classes. Some schools may weigh them as AP courses; other schools don’t use them to calculate GPA.

A word of caution: taking obvious GPA-boosting classes at a CC or online will be clear to the adcom. If you are considering outside classes, make sure they are solid courses (not Gardening 101).

I’d agree with 11dimensions. At this point, what’s done is done and you shouldn’t spend your year abroad thinking of ways to boost your GPA. Enjoy it! Definitely write about it on an essay because it will allow you to stand out. Furthermore, how competitive is your school? Is a 3.771 considered to be “competitive?” It’s not that bad of a GPA either. Post back when you’ve taken your SATs/ACTs. Good luck!

Why would you think you could get straight A’s if you didn’t last year? I get really tired of students asking me dumb things like “if I get a 100 on the final can I still pass the course even though I have a failing grade so far?” ANSWER: get that 100 and then we’ll talk. But no one ever does that.

This is pretty cliche but my main issue during freshman year was actually doing my homework not like how in middle school i did them in the classes before and i changed that mid year and got straight A my last quarter so if i assert myself I know i can get straight as

^^What in the hell…?
