extremely poor student aiming for BU, NYU

ED to CAS NYU
Regular BostonU
Regular SUNY Bing

SAT - 2000
GPA - 3.1
ECs: (only important ones) President of a club, Treasurer of a club (both small clubs), Student newspaper

Schools you recommend? Business / Journalism interest.

Sorry man. Being extremely poor will help out with financial aid, it won't help the 3.1 gpa with 2000 sat. You won't get into NYU with those scores.

Shouldn't you know already by now if you have been accepted ED to NYU

wait a sec, being poor might help. especially since adcoms can see if you've had less opportunity.

If by "extremely poor student," you mean that you are impoverished, IMO you are making a big mistake applying to NYU and BU because neither is generous with need-based financial aid. You'd raise your chances of finding an affordable college by applying to more public institutions in your home state.

If by "extremely poor student," you are referring to your 3.1, I think that both BU and NYU would be reach schools for you. I can't off the top of my head think of colleges that would meet your requirements, but try checking out a book like "Colleges that Change Lives," by Loren Pope.

Penn State and Syracuse have good journalism programs

Assuming you mean you're not a good student (based on your 3.1 gpa) I'd agree that NYU and BU are real reaches for you. Penn State and Syracuse are probably matches, though the Syracuse jounalism program can be tough to get into. Although I don't know whether they have good journalism or business programs, you might want to take a look at schools like U of Delaware, U of Pittsburgh, UMass at Amherst or George Washington. If you want an LAC instead of a large state or private school, you might want to take a look at schools like Dickinson College, Allegheny, Franklin and Marshall.

I'm not sure when the deadlines are for most of those schools. Most of them may be past. But the GW deadline is Jan 15, and U of Pitt has rolling admissions and no deadline. Pitt has an undergrad school of business administration and GW has an undergrad school of Media and Public Affairs (journalism) and an undergrad School of Business. By the way, Penn State also appears to have rolling admissions and no hard and fast deadline, though the website says that the later you apply, the more difficult it is to get into the campus and program you want.

According to the GWU website, today is the deadline for RD applicants

Darn. Right you are. I guess I had old info.

Poor in academics, not financially - financially doing super well
So both reaches? How about SUNY bing?

Oh, then you definently won't get in. Did you get into NYU???????

Baklava, 2000 SAT score is AVERAGE for NYU. MANY MANY MANY people get into NYU with a 2000 (half). If something is going to keep chocolate out, its the 3.1 GPA

In addition to that, chocolate, you should know that these "chances" threads are just a bunch of smart kids who think they have the world figured out (including exactly how adcoms will view an app.) I say don't lose hope because anything is possible :)

yeah seriosuly, people need to stop asking their chances, no 1 here is an admissions officer and the people giving you answers are also applying to colleges so really they know nothing at all

OH really? How would you know HALF the people that have been accepted into NYU have around a 2000 SAT score, didn't know you know all of them. Why don't you go look at the NYU thread and look at the people who have already been accepted's stats? Then come back here and prove me wrong

jeez baklava loves bashing people. i think you hav a shot, my cousin had a higher gpa [ 3.8, wiht a 1200 and she got in ] she said nyu likes people that have really diverse extra currics and essays. and baklava, 2000 is about avg its just this site has way too many crazy perfect score-ish people and w/e you never kno what can happen.

chocolate, chin up and apply. if you get rejected then you can always transfer out. if you put ur all into it i think youll be ok.

Actually, Baklava, 2000 is the equivalent of 1330. And the average SAT score at NYU is 1318 according to Princeton Review. So half the people getting into NYU with scores below his is probably quite accurate. The GPA though, is what may kill you. It's a definate reach, but worth a shot.

Thanks ^ thats nice of you to say
But even though CC is full of smart kids they do represent the kind of people who are applying , no?

Does NYU look at unweighted or weighted?

they mostly represent the like top 10-15 percent of applications, if every single "smart" person on this site was representative of a good school's student body, i wouldnt make it into my safety school. nyu looks at both weighted and unweighted, but usually does focus more onthe unweighted. nyus deadline is coming up so be sure to send out ur app soon =)
