Extremely uneven SAT scores

Using the blue book I'm hovering at 800 on writing (mc score, should be able to get at least a 9 on my essay) a 710 in cr and barely breaking 600 on math. That would make a pretty decent composite, but my math score is HORRIBLE. How negatively will this effect me. I'm hoping for at least a 750 in writing and 650 in math on the real sat. My math grades sort of reflect this. I got A-'s B's and B+'s in AC math but received 97's in my normal level math courses with little effort. I'm not trying to be an engineering major but do you think there's anything I could do to offset my horrible math score.

If you can afford it, I would really suggest some private tutoring around the math. It’ll really help you better understand the rhythm of the math section. Sounds like you’re a great writer…but unfortunately quite a few schools don’t even look at that section…they just want the CR + Math combined score, and if your math is hovering at 600 it’s really going to have an impact.

I’d personally say that getting tutoring would be extremely unnecessary. Rather than doing that, buy a SAT I Math focused book and practice all you can out of that. From what I hear, Dr. Jung’s would be your best bet: [Amazon.com: Dr. John Chung’s SAT Math (9781439234976): John Chung: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Dr-John-Chungs-SAT-Math/dp/1439234973)

I don’t know If I can get a tutor. I’ll look into it though. I’m currently doing the barons’ math workbook. I can’t really tell if it’s helping yet. I think a major contributing factor is that I get really anxious with anything related to math during test taking and I suppose I’ll have to just get over that and move faster. When I used the practice test and gave myself a few extra minutes on each section I got a 750 so time management seems key for me.

i’m kind of in the same boat except my cr score is much lower than math…630 cr and 750 math on the march sat… i bought the online course from collegeboard and ive found it to be pretty helpful so far (ive only had it for two weeks)…but i got close to 700 on my most recent practice test for cr.
good luck getting your math score up :)

I suspect a LAC will not have issues since they are not there to support a higher end math related career…i recommend contacting the school admissions dept and ask them directly…

good luck and enjoy!

“I suspect a LAC will not have issues since they are not there to support a higher end math related career.”

Not true at all. Many LACs have excellent mathematics and physics departments and send a significant percentage of students to grad schools which require strong quant skills. What many LACs don’t have is engineering.

Ever heard of Harvey Mudd College?

Guess we are in a similar boat. I got 650 Reading 800 Math and 790 Writing.

Can you try the act? Some find it more straightforward.
