Extremely Unique Case, Where Should I Apply? (Low GPA, Good Sat's, GREAT High School)

Premo --

First of all - I agree with everything Slithy has said.

Next – I know Horace Mann by reputation (we live in the general area) and it is a fantastic school.

Schools ranked 30-70, your grades are somewhat low (as you know) though your SATs are fine for many of these. I would have thought Pitt would have made a good school as far as quality but you don’t love it … fair enough.

So – as far as schools – the first question I’d ask is what are you looking for – big, small, urban, rural, east, west, etc. etc. etc.

Next, once you get your target, are there any places where Horace Mann has a connection. None of us here really know where you can get someone to

Finally, and most importantly, if your goal is to transfer – what school would give you the best shot at this. Again, (but not to push) Pitt – it’s a known school – and applying from there may be better than applying from some other school.

Bottom line without a hook your grades will keep you out of the schools you want to consider. How much of a hook you have is very much a school-by-school thing. Fortunately, I believe that Horace Mann has fantastic resources.

Sorry we can’t be of more specific help.

PremoLoco, my suggestion would be that you look into a PG year at one of the Boarding Schools. If you are motivated to improve your GPA then this would be the place to show them what you’ve got. Perhaps a “development candidate” approach would be the best way to approach them. It would also give you an extra year to mature and define your academic goals.

Hey guys, everything worked itself out. I talked with Dean Fitzsimmons on the phone, and due to him and my father being such close friends they are actually going to accept me. I just sent in my application for Early Action yesterday.

I can’t wait to visit the campus during December break, I can’t believe I actually made it in.

Thanks for everyones help!

This is why I have no respect for Harvard.

Great news. When you visit Cambridge, you might see a few ■■■■■ buddies hanging from one of the bridges.

This thread will come in handy in the future. Ridiculous.

I have a feeling he’s a ■■■■■. If not…I pity the current state of college admissions.

Not a ■■■■■, just someone who got lucky!!!

You guys don’t complain when the Kennedy’s all get accepted, why me?

HHMMM - Wonder if Dean Fitzsimmons reads CC.

First of all, I didn’t complain when the Kennedy’s all got accepted, in fact none of the high school to college aged kids here would have been alive then (I assume you’re talking about JFK, Robert Kennedy, etc. or I just pay no attention). I wouldn’t if it happened now for two reasons. First, they’re scores/GPA were probably much better than yours, and second they were a famous family. Famous people boost recognition and probably applications, and they’re usually at least close to qualified. That is why I’m complaining. Plus you sound extremely entitled.

Please do not compare yourself to the Kennedys. You have expressed no genuine interest in public service or making the world a better place. You just want Daddy to buy you into a better school than you deserve to go to, and it doesn’t bother you one bit that you getting a place in the freshman class at Harvard (if you are to be believed) means some kid of less fortunate circumstances who has a 4.0 and has worked his a** off to realize his dream of going to Harvard won’t be admitted. It’s hard for me to imagine how any of your teachers or counselors could give you glowing recommendations. You are an apathetic C student and seem completely self-involved. And your command of the English language, as others have pointed out, does not jibe with the story that you go to a highly respected, rigorous school.

Maybe some11no is right that you are a ■■■■■.

@Sally it doesn’t bother me one bit. Just like it was planned all my life, I will be attending Harvard. I really don’t care what you nerds think, I came here for the advice from knowledgable people. Not the self righteous aseholes who spend 5 hours a night on HW every night, do tons of community service, and end up going to Middlebury lol. Despite all your hard work to get into an Ivy.

It may come off as arrogant, but I knew I would get into Harvard. Thats what happens when your dads worth over 9 figures and friends with all the powerful politicians. Thats why the Kennedy’s got in, and thats why I got in.

Just to give everyone out there inspiration. Yes it is possible to be the best looking kid in school who can get any girl, be the most popular, and go to Harvard without doing any work. While also being the richest and driving a $100,000 car to school.

Yes, I know I sound perfect! And guess what, some day I will be a senator to some of you. And then most likely president.

Thats the path that was set into motion since I was born! And to think some of you were telling me to go to CC LOL!

Yep, he’s a ■■■■■.

A ■■■■■ who overplayed its hand. Really, what high net worth family in NYC drives themselves?

IF the OP is not a ■■■■■, I was going to suggest he spend a gap year volunteering here in Arkansas, learning how the other half survives with none of the resources he has been privileged to have.

What a scam.

I don’t study or do homework for 5 hours. In fact, if we’re being completely honest, college is going to suck at first because I’ve never really studied. And homework-wise, I get it all done in class. So you’re talking to the wrong person if you think I’m a nerd. Are you saying community service is bad, because that proves you’re an idiot. By the way, you did not know that you would get into Harvard, that’s why you started this thread. Pay attention to your own thread. There are people who went to Middlebury who are smarter, more talented, more successful, better people than you, so I don’t know why you’re saying it is a bad thing to go there. The Kennedy’s had a hook that they were famous, but they were also good people, who didn’t do terribly at high school, and probably got higher than a 1830 (well the 2 part equivalent). I’m sure you aren’t good looking, popular, and to tell the truth, you probably won’t even be the richest at Harvard. You don’t sound perfect. You sound like a stupid, entitled little prick who’s dad will probably disown him when he drops out of college because he can’t keep up. And, no, you won’t be senator, because if one day some guy running for senate comes from a 9 figures making family, went to Harvard (before he dropped out, of course), had bad scores, is from New York, etc. I will personally get this thread out to the general public to see what a jerk you are. This has not been in motion since you were born, your daddy managed to get you in, but you will fail.

I just can’t wait for the “I failed at Harvard, because I’m an idiot, what do I do now?” Thread. Oh wait, for him it’d be “i failed harvard cause i’m an idiot, what do i do know.”

That all being said, I figure he’s probably a ■■■■■, but just in case he’s not I enjoyed venting about how much of a prick he is. Even if he is a ■■■■■, to even dream up someone this entitled makes him a prick anyway.

It would make me so happy if someone’s pants ever do spontaneously combust when they lie. Just saying

Please tell me that PremoLoco is a ■■■■■. If he truly did get accepted into Harvard, then I will rage with a thousand sun.

There is NO reason why PremoLoco should go into Harvard. I would consider myself a far better candidate, but I know very well that even if I obtain 200+ hours of community service, and 3.7+ GPA, that I don’t belong there.

What do you want to major in and what type of school are you looking for? You are right that you have lots of options notwithstanding the GPA. Plus, I assume you are a junior and can bring it up some this year as well as retake the SAT and shoot for 2100.

In any event, some ideas – New York publics (you are lucky to live in such a good state system), CA publics (mid-tier like Davis and Irvine, which are schools that love OOS students willing to pay $50K), or Miami (Ohio)/Bowling Green (solid state schools that would like more OOS). Ditto for other good state schools like Kansas, Kansas State, Alabama, South Carolina, and Clemson. As for privates, if you like classics think about St. John’s great books (NM or Md) who take almost everyone (but curriculum extremely challenging) or mid-tier Catholics like Marquette, Loyola (La or Md), and Fordham.
