all right...i was deferred. now, i am thinking about retaking a few tests cuz they are pretty low.

act 31

sat ii math iic 690 , bio-m 700, physics 590

so now, i am not sure if i should retake some sat iis (thinking about us history) or go for the sat reasoning test. maybe i can score well on the sat i to make up for my low act score.

so pretty much, should i shoot for improving sat ii scores or act/sat score?

thanx a bunch. any help is greatly appreciated!

btw...registration deadline is in a few hours!!!

There another ACT you can take before deadline? Then you can redo ACT and the SAT IIs. If it comes down to a choice between reasoning and subject tests, it would depend on how much study time you could allocate to each subject. If you're looking at a good 30-50 hours I'd retake a few of the SAT IIs and/or add the US Hist. Also, I'm not sure how long ago you took these courses and how fresh the info is in your memory, so the amount of study time necessary would depend on that. If you've got less time to review, I'd shoot for the SAT Reasoning (because you might one of those lucky few who will do better on SAT than ACT and end up scoring really high as compared to ACT without studying much).

Also, the admissions office would probably be able to give you a good suggestion

well, i took us history last year as a junior and scored a 5 on the ap test. i would have to do a review of all the material, but i guess that wouldn't be that bad with a review book or something.

as far as the sat reasoning test, would it help to say that i was commended this year for the psat? and i didn't study for the psat. i am very strong in math and writing and quite weak in reading. here is a breakdown of my act score to show you what i mean:

it turns out that i can still take the ACT on Feb 11 (this is ok for regular decision, right?) and the SAT i or SAT ii on Jan 28.

but now, i am starting to wonder if taking the sat i is a good idea.

i took the act three times already, which probably doesn't look real good anyways. the science part just keeps killing me. i don't know what it is.

keep in mind that one year has progressed since this test, so what do you think my sat i predictions could be?

do you think that sat ii and sat i scores show correlations to each other? i think that sat iis are mainly based on studying - if you have the time to study, you should do great ( unfortunately, as my scores show, i didn't have much time). the sat i, it seems, is more an overall high school exam that shows strenghts in basic subjects.

also, if i scored well (3 5s and 1 four in lang) on ap exams (us history, euro history, language, and bio), wouldn't harvard kind of look at them and say, yes, she knows her stuff. why is it necessary that i take the satiis to show that i have sufficient knowledge of certain subjects when the ap scores already do so?

i think i am leaning towards the sat i cuz it is ridiculous to take the act four times, and i think i have already shown that i have a good understanding of certain subjects through the ap tests.

My PSAT was very close to my SAT, and I think this is the same for most people who score reasonably well on the PSAT and have studied all subjects included on the test. I that if you took the SAT your score would be basically the same as your current ACT score. You can take SAT prep, but I'm not sure if it really helps or if there is enough time to take a course before the test. I don't know much about them.

If you were nervous about your scores, though, why didn't you retake or whatever last Spring or this fall? It's getting very late now. I know there are a lot of schools that won't even look at January scores.

I posted before you edited your post and added the last three paragraphs. Let me cover those quickly now.

SAT IIs and the SAT I scores would have a correlation, I am guessing, because they have the same basic format. People can score differently on the SAT I than on SAT IIs; however, based on your PSAT score my advice remains the same. It is necessary for you to take them because the college requires it.

I definitely do not think you should take the ACT four times. It is also rather dumb, in my opinion, for you to take and retake so many tests of so many types. It seems to me that you will not score high enough on the SAT for it to make a significant different in your application. Instead, focus on keeping your grades high and invest your time into your passions. Write a good application, and have fantastic essays.

AP exams certainly give a lot of useful information, and they are obviously more comprehensive than SAT IIs. That doesn't change the fact that Harvard and most other high level schools require SAT IIs

i don't know...i go to a pretty lame public school. my g. counselor doesn't even know what the sats are...so basically, i heard about them through CC. i don't really know anybody who has taken them, so nobody can give me advice. if only i knew more about college requirements and sats and acts beforehand, i am sure i would have had it all planned out much better so that i can take the exams at the right times and leave time for improvement. but its too late now...i am learning through experience. to be honest, i thought i would be outright rejected from harvard, but i only applied cuz my dad instilled this idea of going to harvard ever since is was like ten. i thought it could only be a dream to go there. and now, i get this deferrell letter that leaves me so uncertain. it could be one of those "polite" ones or it could mean that i am so close. i don't know. i didnt really spend that much time on the harvard app cuz i had no faith in myself. but now, i cant let this opportunity pass me by...i just want to improve my scores and see what happens.

well, thanks for your help and advice. i really appreciate it. i think i will take the sat i. and i will let fate guide me wherever it pleases.

well, i just finished registering for the sat reasoning test on January 28, 2006. what a great way to start off the new year! (note the hint of sarcasm)

my mother is definitely NOT going to like the $41.50 fee on her credit card. i'll pay her back one day...

I just got the chance to look at this thread again; with all this new information, it seems like you made the best choice! There's no science section on the SAT Reasoning, so that will probably help you tons. Also, your 5 on the bio test will bolster your SAT II score for bio. Good luck RD!
