Exxon Internship

Hey everyone,

I am a freshman ChemE and I was just wondering, just how competitive are exxon internships? Particularly for after sophomore summer. I have heard that one needs a 3.7 to even have their resume looked at but outside of that what else is needed? What else do they look for? Any general tidbits or guidelines would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone have any idea what a sophomore summer engineering intern at exxon or a similar company would get paid for the summer? Thanks in advance!

Summer internships pay pretty well, some up to 80% of a starting salary.
My advice is that the only way to fail for certain is not to apply. Do what you can and see where that takes you.

thank you very much for the response…however i was just curious as to maybe someone’s experience who has interviewed with and/or gotten an internship with exxon in the past

Whole bunch of Exxon interview experiences here. Should give you a good idea.

They are brutal. They will not consider someone unless they have a 3.5 and above GPA. Also, you will need to have research experience, leadership position, some work experience, and the right attitude (Type A extrovert) just to get them interested enough to invite you for an interview. They pay really well so the position is very competitive. Their preference are Juniors and some, if any, Sophomores… So get involved with things and keep your GPA up. Good luck!

Thank you very much styrkur that was just the answer i was looking for…is research experience a must if i am involved in other activities? thanks again!

These days yes, it is a must. When I was speaking with a representative from Valero Oil, I was a sophomore, she told me that they prefer Junior interns but that I was on the right track since I already have research experience… Getting research experience is not difficult if you go to a big university. I suggest emailing random professors in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or any department that interests you. Tell them you are willing to work in their research group as a volunteer, for credit, or for pay. You will be surprised how many of them need undergraduate help. This is how you get your foot in the door.

For a leadership position. Join a club that you like, it can be any club you enjoy, and then run for an officer position when they hold elections. Or if clubs are not your thing. Emphasize in your resume that you are a natural leader. For example, you might have a work or volunteer experience and you can say in one bullet something like, “Applied leadership skills to train two new employees on daily duties and safety protocols.”

The main thing is to get involved now. You do not need to do all of this at once, you are a freshman so you have time until Junior year. Companies like EXXON are really into students who were involved. Also, make sure you keep your GPA as high as you can. A 3.5 and above GPA is great along with experiences I mentioned. If a 3.5 can’t be kept then your limit is a 3.3 GPA. Good luck!

Also, try to have fun. Make sure you have a balance in your life.
