F-1 visa status, Chem eng, internship/job?

So I'm an international student at the cockrell Chemical Eng department. I'm a freshman now, and I wish to get internship on my sophomore or junior year so I want to plan early.

What is the limitation of an international student in terms of getting an internship/job? I've heard of something like "not being allowed to work off campus" but some companies listed on the Expo (like chevron for example, Engineering Expo 2010) says that they "hire international student". Anybody can help me?

I used to be on an F-1 as well, and I was told that I wasn’t allowed to accept any money from an off-campus job. You know because of taxes and all. As long as there’s no money or “gifts” involved, like an unpayed internship I don’t think anyone’s going to mind. And that way you can always hope to impress so hard that they offer to sponser a work visa too. You should probably check with uscis before you do anything in case things have changed, just call them up.

^that’s a great idea. “impress them so hard”. Like it!

What’s uscis?

us citizenship and immigration services - the place that issued your f-1.
