F&M Regular Decision 2016

yeh I have several, but f&m is like my “the one”. I was deferred from ED1 to RD, so this is the 2nd time the school says “no” to me. I guess my fin aid request is a bit high.

Accepted
SAT CR+M: 1400 (2100 Overall)
SAT II: US History (750), Lit (680)
GPA: 3.16 (About 3.8 senior year, which is not factored in)
Very Good Essays

Accepted (a couple days ago just read this)

Accepted!
3.44 GPA
32 ACT
Had a great interview when I visited in the summer
Did optional essay

Accepted! 31 ACT and 3.8 GPA. Super excited, but we’ll see about finaid.

have any international students received their packages yet?

D got accepted. This was a safe school for her. She’s leaning on taking another. I don’t say this to brag, but to let those on the waiting list know so if F&M is really their top choice, accept the waitlist spot because F&M does take from their waitlist - so there will be spots available. For her it came down to the other school having a stronger Bio program than F&M. But we all loved the school. good luck everyone.

Son is accepted but choosing another college. Another waitlist spot opening up for someone!

Initially I loved the school but then became a bit confused after I went on student review and researched the college more. There seems to be a lot of dissatisfaction among students. For every positive review there was a negative review. Can anyone speak on this or explain why this may be the case?

That depends on what site you visited. If you visited the one with the same name as the topic you mentioned (I went on…) they almost always have an pretty equal number of good and bad reviews. Look at other review sites for a more accurate picture.

Accepted:
4.0 UW GPA
1740 SAT (Did not submit, used writing supplement)
Visited over summer, was deferred ED1.
Did optional essays and had strong leadership and extracurriculars.

Was accepted at a better fit for me, so will not be attending. Best of luck to anyone on the wait list!

Hello everyone, I’m kind of stuck between choosing F&M or another school, and I’m wondering about F&M’s bio program and also F&M’s pros and cons in general?

Wondering the same, & similar situation. Heard it’s incredibly rigorous and difficult to get good grades, if someone would comment on that it would be great.

Accepted with FA. International student with a sat of 1970 and great ECs (speak four languages etc.) plus good recommendation letters.

re: Pheebers -> “I’m pretty sure F&M doesn’t do merit scholarships.”

Correct and the reason is because F&M is trying to climb the prestige ladder and join its aspirants (the colleges it wants to be associated with) at the top (Amherst, Williams, Bowdoin…the elite, national liberal arts colleges). They don’t give merit aid and F&M wants to join that group.

Wouldn’t you want to give merit to keep the top students and raise your overall stats? My friend’s son was accepted easily – perfect ACTs & 5s on all his APs, GPA way up there, great ECs – but they have no need so he’ll probably attend another school that gave him merit money. They said OOS UMichigan is going to be cheaper for them – and that’s saying something.

On the other hand, F&M’s overall package was the best we’ve seen from anyone, even though it didn’t have merit, and my D was accepted to a lot of schools that meet 100% of need. So I appreciate that they’re giving money to people who need it, too.

Pheebers, do you have any input on the rigor question above? D is a junior and an athlete, so believe it or not she needs to start deciding soon where to apply ED. F&M is on her list, but I am concerned about the alllegedly intense workload. She comes from a competitive high school and works very long hours on schoolwork, but she is not an Ivy level student. So I get alarmed when the school compares their work load to that of Harvard.

@TheGFG I can’t be 100% sure how it is. It’s not going to be the easiest place in the world, but as to whether it’s too rigorous? I actually posted a thread asking a similar question and after a lot of discussion, the conclusion was “it depends.”

As for F&M specifically, they have a great retention rate, which means they do an excellent job of keeping students from flunking and/or wanting to transfer out. I also firmly believe a small, highly competitive LAC like F&M with holistic admissions does not admit anyone they do not believe will succeed. Every application is considered very carefully.

If you’re worried that your D will squeak in because she’s an athlete, (is she being recruited?) I’d say that’s less likely to be a problem than you think. There are a bunch of stories about athletes being recruited and then not getting in; to me, that says for some reason the school didn’t think the student was qualified once the transcript, etc was submitted.

Almost overwhelmingly, the thought on that thread was that if your D is a hard worker she’ll be fine. She wouldn’t arrive expecting to coast, she’s an athlete so she’s used to managing her time well, and she’ll get help if she runs into trouble.

I’m comfortable that although it will be a challenging place for my D, she’ll be fine and end up with an amazing education and opportunities. She’s not 100% sure she’s going yet, but the chances are pretty good.

And for what it’s worth, some people at Harvard say the hardest part about it is getting in.

I was admitted to Franklin & Marshall. Im a little concerned about the reputation of their business program which is what I would be pursuing. I am intending on going on to law school which is why F&M is a candidate because they have a fantastic reputation for sending their students to prestigious law schools. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about their undergraduate business program.

Accepted!
MD resident, UW GPA 3.9, ACT 32, 4 AP’s, varsity athlete in two sports. Strong campus visit last fall, met with coach for private tour. Strong FA package, which keeps a pricey LAC college on the list. Looking forward to our visit to campus tomorrow and hoping to meet some other accepted students!
