Pros and Cons of F&M and Bucknell? I would love to know about the social life, school work, professors, and students at both schools. If anyone knows a lot about either school, any information would be wonderful. Thank you!

Look closely at the curriculum for each school. My son attended F&M as a Freshman last year. One of his best friends from high school attended Bucknell. From their very recent discussions this summer, it seems that as much as my son likes F&M, Bucknell may offer more choices in course selection (especially within your major), more EC opportunities and fewer ‘fluffy’ required courses. My son actually sounded a little envious of his friend’s academic experience at Bucknell, as my son and his friend share many of the same interests and plan on the same major (Government/Business and possibly Pre-Law).

On the ‘plus’ side, F&M is a beautiful campus with nice facilities and great student-teacher ratios, even though its location is a little remote. I’ve never visited Bucknell so I really can’t comment on those things. Hope this helps …

That was very helpful, thank you! I’ve been noticing the same thing as I’ve been looking through the F&M course catalog. It seems like the classes are very specific and that there isn’t as much offered. Your input helps a lot, thanks!

Any other opinions are welcome, social life included. Thanks!

How about the social scene? How does the frat life at Bucknell influence the overall experience. Does social life revolve around the frats? Are there non-alcohol related activities on the weekend? How does the experience at Bucknell, with 50% of the sophs, juniors and seniors being frat/sorority members differ from F&M?

Bump

S1 went to Bucknell, S2 is at F&M. Bucknell is a bigger school so there are more course choices. It is also very frat centered-work hard, party very hard. Very preppy scene and jock contingent. Big beautiful campus, lovely small town with cute shops. Hard to get to and from if you don’t have a car. Not much nearby either. S1 did not join a frat which made it harder for him socially, but he me the girl of his dreams, graduated and within 3 mo. had a great high paying job.
F&M has frats, but not everyone joins. There is also work hard, party hard but I don’t think as hard partying as at Bucknell. There are a good number of international students. Profs are accessible which was good for my youngest. Campus is also beautiful but small. Lancaster is a bigger city which also has art galleries, shops, a baseball stadium which they put an outdoor ice rink in the winter, and the famous Central Market, but also there are more dangerous areas as in any larger city. Lancaster also has an Amtrak station. I think their strongest majors are premed, prelaw, and government. All S2’s friends are very well-spoken and polite. We think it was a great choice for him, but we will see how long it takes S2 to find a job!
