I have a huge, i guess, enormous problem.
I am in my first year of college and noone told me that I am not allowed to take more than 1 online classes. The only thing which I know of is that i need to be enrolled in 12 units. I am enrolled in 18 Units, but I am taking 2 online classes.
Am I out of status?
are there any consequences for me?
Thank you!

Legally speaking, at most one online class may count towards the 12 credits you need for full-time status for your F-1 visa. However, once you reach full-time status (12 credits with at most one online class), you can add as many online classes as you wish and remain in good standing.

Code of Federal Regulations, Title 8, Section 214.2(f)(6)(i) paragraphs (B) and (G).

However, your college may have stricter requirements than that. Your college will report “in full-time status” or not to SEVIS, without further explanation. So I agree with aunt bea that only your college’s international student office can tell you whether they reported you as out-of-status.

If you were reported as not enrolled full-time and are out-of-status, you can petition to have your F-1 status reinstated. If your petition were denied (unlikely since you acted in good faith and didn’t break any laws), you would have to leave the US and reapply for a new student visa from abroad. Your college’s international student office can explain your options to you if that becomes necessary.

For now, just check with the international student office if they recorded you as enrolled full-time in SEVIS.
