FA Disbursement Question

I received a Grant in the amount of 2775 for Summer term. My classes came out to be 1380-ish. They disbursed 1387 and dropped about $5 in my FSU Card account. What happened to the rest of it being disbursed? I would like the rest of the 2775. Will it be put in my account later or do I not get the rest of my grant money? I was trying to call the FA office but I was on hold for 30 minutes and it's kind of frustrating. I could just walk there, but who knows if there is a line or anyone actually available to talk to me.

never mind, I finally got an answer after waiting another 30 minutes. I don’t get the rest.

lol you probably had other “fees” due.

ok, so you can’t use the rest of your $ for housing?

Okay. The total cost of my classes for summer: $1381.04 (that includes ALL fees). I signed up for 6 credit hours.
My summer grant offered was: $2775.
It didn’t disburse until yesterday. They took out $1387 of the $2775.
That $1387 went towards paying for my classes. The left over amount was $5.96. That is all the excess I will receive bc during summer term when you take less than 12 credits they don’t take out the full amount of grant offered, they take half. I don’t get to see the rest of that $2775.
That is what I was told over the phone.

^Seems fair to me. I was told there were no grants available for the summer, you should be thrilled to get your full tuition paid and enough leftover for a snack!

Wait, what grant was this?

Because I got every single penny of financial aid I was offered over the summer disbursed. I was only taking 6 credits, not 12, and my entire grant was disbursed.

I agree with Pasbal. I would investigate this further. It doesn’t sound right according to what I have seen in the past.

Summer is different than Fall or Spring as well.

For Fall/Spring, what you described would be the case- not taking 12 credits worth leads to your financial aid being prorated for the number of credits you take (if you only take 6, you get half your aid, if you take 9, you get three fourths, etc).

For Summer, 6 credits is considered full-time.

Just curious, you were also registered for Summer A or B classes right? This grant seems to have been disbursed for Summer C, did you also have a class that began during this “semester”?

Bottom line though is that something doesn’t seem right, at all.

@Nolette…who says I’m not thrilled my classes are paid for, but I’m still out of work and struggling to look for work and having that little extra would be a great help. I’m not a kid I can’t keep calling mommy and daddy for money. That money at the end of the day was “granted” to me, I think i have a right to question it.

@Pasbal
I am taking an A session and a C session class. I wasn’t offered any grants until a week after payment was due for A/B session back in May. I called in May and they said they wouldn’t disburse until C session started.

I looked on blackboard and it says:
“Federal Pell Grant may be pro-rated for less than 12 credit enrollment.”

So I guess I’m SOL, but I’m glad I got the grant anyway. I just didn’t realize they were going to do that. I can’t help but be a little bummed out.

The part about not getting it till Summer C makes sense, you have to have 6 credits of classes before they disburse any funds, so three credits in A and 3 in C would mean that you’d get your money then (during summer C disbursement).

I don’t know whether you should call or talk to them in person. I have found though that calling is about as useful as beating your head against a brick wall, so in person is probably easier.

But I get the feeling that quite honestly you’re going to get nowhere. The FA Office isn’t known for admitting that they don’t know what they’re talking about.

I took a walk and talked to someone there. The woman was actually really helpful and explained it to me. It made sense and there is no way I;ll see the rest of that money.
I’m not a continuing student, I’m a new transfer so I was lucky to get the money in the first place.
