We know Rice finally recently updated FA documents in status check. I have everything on the FA requirements documents either completed or waived except for one thing - selective service registration...what do I do for that? Will I not get FA unless that's done?

I have the same question for my son...it says to go to the Selective Service website, but neither I nor my son could locate it.

^and we couldn't find a link (or a reference to it) on Rice's website

h t t p : / / w w w . s s s . g o v

...and I tried registering, but it won't let me

BTW, I am resident, non-citizen (will be on April 10) and under 18

same; I found SSS forms for other schools, but not for Rice. S is a citizen.

I believe there is a link when you fill out the fafsa - but not to worry about Rice financial aid. Even if you get your stuff in late, you are guaranteed financial aid. It's not "early bird gets the worm" like at the state schools. ;)

hey guys, i have spent a lot of time looking into this earlier in the year and i have concluded that its not that big of a deal. let me summarize:

basically, when i registered for fafsa, it said that ss reported that im not registered even though i am. i did a couple of things.

short term approach: i directed fafsa to send my info to ss for registration even though im already registered. i did that because once you select that, i believe you are eligible for pell grant (federal aid). i called fafsa like... 20 times and each time, they assured me that i AM eligible for pell grant (federal aid). being eligible is the key thing since before you are, no school will consider you for their aid.

long term approach: i wrote to selective service letting them know the situation. i didn't even bother with their website since the registration part does not work at all. don't try calling them either, because they put you on endless holds (i was on for 40 minute once but no one picked up, haha). im guessing they probably just threw this in the trash... o well, i did my best.

as of now another school (dartmouth) has already sent me a tentative financial aid statement, which in my mind implies that i have done everything right despite selective service's screw up. so while i can't say for sure that rice will do the same, i can say for sure that the federal government will consider you eligible for federal aid once step 1 is completed, and that it is impossible to contact selective service directly so just do what you can and hope for the best.

by the way, im a permanent residence if that makes any difference.

hope this helps.

Thank you infinitely wingless and anxiousmom! I directed FAFSA to register me as well, so I should be set to go, I believe! Now I just hope I won't get my FA information late because of all this, but instead, it still comes with my admission decision!

Same thing here. Not really sure what to do. Should I just call Rice and ask what I should do?

Call FAFSA, they are open 24-7, I believe and they helped me to find out how to register for selective service. I think all you have to do is make corrections and on number 22, choose register me and then continue till it's done. That simple. Call anyways!

Ok...I called Rice...

My son cant apply for SS JUST YET, and that's why we didn't check the box on FAFSA. They said to register on the Selective Service Website and forward the registration certification to Rice University. I asked, and it doesn't affect my son's FA award (if any) UNLESS, he doesn't register on time.

Hope this helps.

Thank you collegebound_09, I already fixed it on the FAFSA, but I had not called Rice. I appreciate the information!

When I did the FAFSA, I chose Register Me, and a few weeks later, I got a card from SSS saying I was still too young to register. Not really sure what I should do. I also tried to register on the SSS website (says you can register at 17 yrs and 3 months), but it says my SSN isn't in their database.

How old are you? I personally was magically registered a month before I turned 18 (don't know how).

The SSS registers you a month before and after your 18th birthday. I'm 17 and four months old.

I'm confused. You can register at 17 years and 3 months? I'm 17 years and 2 months, so I need to wait 1-2 months? What about my financial aid? confused

You can register when your 17 but it will only go "in effect" when your 18.....

At 17 yrs and 3 months, you can register, and the SSS will hold your registration.
