FA for Allied Health Student

Hey!

I would like to make a career change into Dietetics (nutrition) and apply for an accredited program for a second degree in order to become a RD afterwards.

So, I'd like to know if there's good scholarships/grants/loans available for students wishing to pursuit this kind of career?
Do schools take this into consideration while they give you your FA package, are there schools that do this at all?

Any information on financial assistance relevant to my major would be highly regarded.

Thanksss:)

What is your first degree in? When you say second degree, are you talking about a second BS or a master’s degree? Most master’s programs don’t require that you have an undergrad degree in a specific area, and you may be able to just take a few undergrad courses if you’re light on the math/sciences. There might be better funding opportunities for an MS in nutrition - Stafford loan limits are higher, you may be able to get an assistantship, and you’d have an additional credential for your resume. Otoh, if you have most of the undergrad coursework done (chem, bio, and whatever else they require), can you just apply to do the required internship hours and become a RD? (Sorry, I’m not that familiar with how certification works for this profession…I only know that my D’s school has several programs - a BS, an MS, and a certificate/internship.)

sk8rmom: hellooo!! well my first degree is a foreign equivalent of a BA, it was in Law and Politicial Science. I’d have to take the whole program in dietetics because I don’t have the prereqs needed (math, chem, statistics, so on) for the req courses, I’m just hoping I can transfer as many credits as possible to cover for the GE reqs. In HS I did take 3 years of chem, physics and biology… and 4 years of math. But since I have no background in the sciences (or math) from college, I do consider the undergraduate degree to be more suitable for my needs.

As for the licence… [Becoming an RD - Where to Start - Educational and Professional Requirements](http://www.eatright.org/students/education/starthere.aspx) : you have to complete an ADA accredited program and then inter for 900 hrs or take a coordinated program in which you study and intern at the same time.

Thank you for your comments, if you come across any additional info please come back and share!
