FA for OOS

My kid just got acceptance from UIUC engineering, I'm so happy for her.
She also got acceptance from our state university.

She prefer UIUC.

We will apply for FA. The problem is, I'm in the middle of divorce. I'm a stay home mom for 17 years, no working experience. I'm don't know how much I can afford for the tuition.

I heard state university won't give OOS much FA. Is that true? What should we do to get as much FA as possible?

Has she talked with her dad and his family about how much they can pay for her education?

The family promise will pay full for the tuition. But since we already got financial support from them for years (father did not want to find a job…), I’m kind of worry how much more they can still afford? It’s kind of heartbreak for me to see her give up UIUC …

As to providing “much” FA to an OOS, the answer is it isn’t really worse or better than in-state, but UIUC is not great for in-state either. It does not guarantee to meet 100% of need. On average, aid given meets about 70% need based on FAFSA and even then too much of it may be loans rather than grants. With engineering, if the applicant has very high stats, chances are good of getting some merit-based aid but even that is usually limited (some partial tuition relief off of OOS portion).

In any event, decision as to which school to attend does not have to be made until you learn of financial aid package in March or April.

I’m an OOS Engineering major. Had about $25k need. All I got were loans.
