FA help needed please

My son is a US citizen living with a non-US citizen parents in East asia.

He checked off the space where it say "need base finacial aid" on common form.

I am a bit worried that because even though he is US citizen, we the parents are not paying US taxes that he might just be considered like an international students and may be put in a competative pile.

How can we change the check on the common application that has been already sent? Eventhough Yale is need blind ,some people say not to believe that completely. Yale adcom has started reading the application now. Many books I have read say that the adcom will mark on their summary sheet whether the student checked this box. Do you think it is too late to cancel since maybe they have already read my sons common application? If I call the finacial aid dept and ask them to cancel my need based financial aid, will they notify the adcoms who is reading the application so they can cross out on there summary sheet for the second reader?

really concerned about this. I would not want my son to be at a competative pool. thanks

first -- if you son is a US citizen, he will not be considered with the international pool. It doesn't matter if his parents are US citizens or not, nor does it matter if they pay US taxes. ALL US citizens are entitled to the Federal Funds allocated for education and every university that I know of, including Yale, does not discriminate against students whose parents are not US citizens. you do not need to worry -- it will not make a difference. I would suggest, just for your peace of mind, that you contact Yale and make sure that he has been included in the domestic pool of applicants. If he marked "yes" for US citizen, then he will -- but it might make you feel better.

Second -- either you can afford to pay full price to send you son to Yale or he will need financial aid to attend. If you can afford it, then the school will expect you to pay. If you can't afford it -- not applying for financial aid would mean that he might get in and not be able to afford to attend. Unless you can absolutely pay full price for the school (~$50,000/year) keep your application for financial aid active.

Third -- Yale is need-blind, so you do not need to worry. The person who is reading the application will have no idea whether your son needs financial aid. it is not an issue.

Finally -- if you son applied to Yale, even as a US citizen, he is in a competitive pool. Yes -- the international group of students is even more competitive, but you have to understand that Yale is one of the most competitive schools out there with less than 10% of applicants accepted.

Thanks hsmom

"Yale is need-blind, so you do not need to worry. The person who is reading the application will have no idea whether your son needs financial aid. it is not an issue."

but wouldn't the person reading his application see it? it is right there on the commom application. In "acing the application" byM. Hernandez, she says that they mark on ther summary form wether or not you need FA.

I am just concerned because many colleges are not truthful about things.
For example Adcms(HYP) when we ask, say that they never compare students from same school but realistically they DO.
things like this make me not to believe everything the colleges say.

So like I am thinking of taking out private loans after he gets accepted to the colleges of his dream and dont want to make any dent on his application.
Am I being overlly concerned & sensitive about checking the FA?
thank you
