FA question

Hi seasoned BS parents!!! I was hoping some of you might shed some insight on something I read on financial aid for prep schools.

I was reading that FA applications will take into account a stay-at-home mom's ability to earn income as they calculate how much a family can pay. I work VERY part-time (about $4-6K a year), as I am a full-time homeschooling mom to my other two children. I know they make exceptions to this for moms with young children at home (through the preschool years), but I was wondering if being a homeschool mom would be similarly taken into account. I work part-time as a tutor and my pay is very up and down from semester to semester. The year before, I only had two students, whereas this year I have seven, so this year I'd be making a little bit more, while last year I made MUCH less and had to supplement my income with some ebay work.

I may add, our annual family income, with my part-time work included, falls under $75K. We own our own home, with about 20 years left to our very modest mortgage, and we're applying to a private day school as opposed to a BS, but we use the same FA application system as BS.

Thanks for any information you might be able to impart :)

I suspect that different schools would treat your situation differently.

Even without your slightly unusual scenario, the EFC for my family varied by about $10,000 from the “best” to the “worst” offer.

This is one of those things you need to explain in the comments at the end.

It turns out for this year, at least, they didn’t account for my ability to earn income. I think because I will continue to homeschool my other two children. Thanks for your advice :)
