Anybody have experience with Pomona increasing their FA offer based primarily on more generous offers from peer schools?

it doesn’t hurt to ask. all they can do is say no.

yes, Pomona upped their FA award offer when shown DS’s USC’s full tuition scholarship award[ and USC wasn’t considered a peer then].Theirs ended up being the most generous FA offer, compared to D, B Wash U, Carleton and others. Now, that was 5 years ago when Poch was there, so I don’t have a more recent example. I think it is very dependent on how much they really want the student.

Thanks mpm, I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

The answer is no, Pomona does not take the FA offers of other schools into consideration, at least they didn’t for D2. Perhaps they are more willing to do so for a student they really want, however, the AO I talked to said that Admissions and FA are completely separate and when I asked the FA person doing the review specifically about their policy, he said:

Just throwing this out there for future applicants. Also, for us, Pomona’s offer was 9k lower than a slightly lower ranked LAC and 28k lower than one of the most generous colleges in the country (the range in direct costs–tuition, fees, R&B–for these schools is less than 2k).

entomom is correct. Pomona’s FA is very generous compared to their peers, based on our experience for both of our kids who got accepted to Pomona. Just as a reference, of the 12 colleges D2 got accepted into, Pomona’s FA was the highest and best, i.e. with the least contribution from us… They are pretty good with FAs, so appeal and I am sure they’d work with you to make it possible to attend the school.

Good luck.

In my son’s case, Pomona’s FA was very generous – they beat out offers from Middlebury, Williams, Brown, Georgetown, Dartmouth and Boston College. However, Pomona’s offer was also at least 6K less than offers from Yale, Princeton and Vanderbilt. My son ended up choosing Yale, which also happened to give us the best FA.

Interesting about Yale, Princeton and Vanderbilt. Pomona’s FA offer was far better than three UC’s (all with Regent’s scholarships), Brown, Cornell and Penn.

Please reread my posts, unfortunately Pomona was the lowest. They offered us less than Carleton and a lot less than Yale. After saying no initially, just yesterday they decided to give us 5k more per year due to the discrepancy with other offers.

I know it differs by family, I just wanted to put this out there as our experience, YMMV.

Pomona gave me $17,000/year more than Vanderbilt…I guess the best schools for FA vary depending on individual circumstances
