Well, I've heard that many admission officers try to Google applicants to see what comes up, and this includes searching up their MySpace and Facebook pages. To what depths can they do this, especially when the profile in question is set to private? Not that I have scandalous info on my social networking pages, but the whole process seems apprehensible...

I seriously hope that college admissions officers have better things to do than hack into your private Facebook pages. o.O

Yes they are doing it and are finding ways to get invited in as friends or other ways to see what type of people you are associating with, the kind of language that you use and the type of pictures and posts that you have. I would make sure that it is good enough for your grandmother to look at. :)

My grandmother doesn’t understand English, but I get your gist…lol

how can they see your profile if it is completely private? and why exactly do they do this- when they are unsure of whether to accept you? i find that my inside jokes with friends and pictures shouldn’t be the reason i do or do not get accepted into a school…

i’d question the ethicality of adcoms searching applicants on google, let alone checkin up on private profiles, unless they blatantly state on the app “we reserve the right to use the internet to gain more info about the applicant” or something along those lines.

There is nothing unethical about googling anyone, whether it is for a college app or a job. The internet is a free, public resource, which can be used to find suporting eveidence of a student’s accomplishments (sports, awards, etc.) Facebook profile pictures often come up with a student’s name. So, bear that in mind when choosing profile pics.

As for private profiles, they cannot see them. (If a young adcom, was a recent grad and had a mutual friend, he/she could see photos that came up on the news feed. Unlikely though.)

If you do a search for “Facebook”, I bet you’ll find many threads about this.

Most admission officers don’t have time to look students up online.

yeah, i would just be careful, last month there was a huge ‘scandal’/drama about facebook pictures at my high school and basically kids got suspended from sports, and some from school because of inappropriate (drinking) pictures. everyone, deactivated, and im keeping mine down until i finish all my apps…at least there are no more distractions!
