It irks me when people compare cell phones to Facebook. "zomfg if u dun have a facebook u gone get left behind!!!" Umm no. According to this article, Cell phone subscriptions to hit 5 billion globally | Mobile World Congress - CNET Reviews, about 73% of the world population has cellphones. Discounting those who have multiple cellphones, lets say the actual percentage is about 60%. Facebook on the other hand has 7% of the world population and discounting those who have multiple facebook accounts, lets say the actual percentage is 5% or 6%. I don't see how one could compare ~60% of the world population having cellphones to ~6% of the world having a facebook. That's just absurd to me. Fine, if you think Facebook is going to "blow up....you just wait and see", maybe you should wait and see before making comments like "you're gonna get left behind if you don't have a Facebook." It's way to early to make that statement, especially when the percentage of Facebook users isn't even double digits.

Personally, I think Facebook is a fad. Yes it's popular and rising but everything has its time under the sun. "Social Networking" is just a cycle of products. Even though Myspace wasn't no where near the success of Facebook, there was a time when people though Myspace would be big and look at it now. Mainly music artists use it to promote themselves.

How would u get left behind if you dont have a facebook? i agree with you, it is a fad, its just like myspace, (everybody hops on it, your wack if you don’t, give it 2-3 more years everybody starts abusing it and gets tired of it, then they start bashing it after they were the mains ones on it smh, since its gotten "played out/ “wack” now), then you move on to the next best thing… Twitter, me personally i had a facebook it took me awhile to make one cause i knew from the start it was just a myspace v2, and i hated being on social networks with my whole school, i like meeting new ppl so i deleted it after like 3 months, but before i made a facebook i always had “twitter” which i think is more fun and i can get updates of everything going on in the world, now everybody i know is deactivating facebook for twitter…

^That’s partially because it’s really ****ing hard to delete it.

I think certain elements of Facebook might be a fad, but it HAS changed the way we relate to one another. Maybe MySpace paved the way for that and Facebook streamlined it, and maybe there will be something else yet. But I don’t ever think social networking will fade away or not be a part of our lives. It’s just too powerful and it’s done too much to change the way we communicate, especially in college. It might not reach the same amount of people across the world that cell phones do. Perhaps it will only be something that is in developed countries. I don’t know. But it’s too huge to not be a part of our lives anymore, whether you love it or hate it. I personally think it’s a godsend for anyone wanting to manage their social life and connect with others.

To me I just think it goes back to people believe what they want to believe. People tell themselves that “I’ll get left behind if I don’t have a Facebook” because they want to believe that.

I hate to sound harsh and break it to you (this isn’t directed towards anyone, just talking in general), no one cares about you. You’re going to honestly sit there and tell me that if Facebook wasn’t around you’ll still be in contact with the “friends” you’re contacting through Facebook because it’s convenient? BS. You’ll come to realize that there are people on Facebook who couldn’t give two cents if you “stayed in touch” with them or not if Facebook was to be gone today or tomorrow. That’s just how I see it.

With that being said, Facebook isn’t a bad thing. I see how it’s good for those who are internationally separated (i.e. best friend in Africa while you’re here, Family is here while you’re in London study abroad, etc). There are benefits to Facebook but I just don’t think it’s for everyone. The only reason it has so many followers is because half the people on it are mindless and only want to follow what the masses are doing. “Hey! Facebook has 600 million users so that means I HAVE to join it just because everyone else is!”

To whoever said twitter is going to replace facebook: I don’t think so. It’s infinitely harder to stalk people, which, as everyone knows, is the main point of facebook. With twitter, you can’t obsessively look through peoples pictures, etc…
