Facebook Groups

I'm not 100% sure where Im going, but I was accepted into this school in my top 5. Would it be ok to join the Facebook group for admitted students just to see what the people going there are like? Or should I only join if I'm 100% positive I'm going?

Most schools moderate their official admitted students pages as closed forums limited to existing students and prospects who’ve been accepted for admission. If the school you are considering has an open facebook group, it’s fine to try to join before you get your decision.

Many facebook pages for colleges are not official. Often, they are set up by for profit entities trying to make money by connecting with college students. Be careful about the authenticity of any site you try to join.

Thanks, the facebook group is for newly accepted students from this year. It was sent by the school so im sure its real

I would imagine one of the purposes of the FB group is exactly to get info to people like you who might be unsure. Go for it, I’d say. Good luck in choosing.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:

I know this is not your question, but I wanted everyone to be wary of joining any Facebook groups posted on CC. For one things, posting a link to Facebook is against the Terms of Service. For another, people have been posting something like, “Hi! I’m a sophomore at the University of X, and I’m inviting prospective students to join our Facebook page at XXX.” It turns out they are working for a roommate finder service, but they don’t make that clear. When we blocked their links, they started spelling around the filter. So it’s better to join a Faceboook group through the school itself.
