Are there any facebook groups for parents of ole miss students?
each class has its own page not just for parents though. Its the year of their OM graduation.
There is a Facebook page that is maintained by a fraternity brother of mine called “If you love Oxford, MS, and Ole Miss . . .”. Not a parent page, but just a news and memory page. In addition to “liking” the page, you need to click on something that says you want to be notified of new posts. Anyway, the page is a good way to get a feel for the Oxford and Ole Miss “vibe.”
I tried to post a link to this page and CC apparently doesn’t allow that, even thought the page is produced with the cooperation of the university. So just do a Facebook search of the title I’ve given above.
Thanks. What I am looking for is a facebook page like the UA parents page that people post about everything from sharing information about rides, dorms, doctors in the area, majors, even meeting other parents for games… My son just received another scholarship from Ole Miss and now it’s definitely cheaper to go to Ole Miss than UA and I’m trying to help him figure out which place is best for him.
I don’t mean to pry. However I am interested in the other scholarship your son was recently awarded.
I ask because we are waiting to hear back for other scholarships as well and we have yet to hear something. We’re awaiting word on competitive engineering scholarships.
Your son probably already has this one and it wasn’t competitive. DS17 had the OOS wavier & tuition one for 22,850. But he just recvd the Holmes for $3000/year. I didn’t think he would get it because I thought they told us when we visited that they looked at unweighted academic GPA. His weighted was a 3.5 but not his unweighted…
Also waiting for engineering scholarship and other scholarships. S did ALOT of work on essays, etc and we haven’t heard anything.
As i understand it, they will start awarding the competitive engineering scholarships late February into march.
I did a little googling and I think they reserve those for kids who not only have high standardized test scores and gpa’s but who are also national merit scholars and such. They don’t award many it seems.
If you read or hear differently please pass along.
Thanks for the response. My son has a similar merit scholarship and also the 3000.00 holmes scholarship.
So basically reserved for the kids who are already getting lots of merit-aid. Which means my son will probably be out of luck. Oh well.
Well it’s hard to say because they will re-award this money when/if turned down and there seems to a number of awards. They re-award through August. And finally, please don’t take my word for it. What I know couldn’t fill a thimble.
When I do a Google search, it’s proof positive a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
@STEM2017 I doubt that any of the “named” scholarships (Carrier, Newman, etc.) go to students who don’t get full tuition or close to it with the Academic Excellence Award. Ole Miss actually awards a lot of scholarships, but the only way to winnow it down is through grade-point and test scores, until a fairly small pool of prospective recipients is created. Everybody in that pool is probably already getting free or almost-free tuition.
@EarlVanDorn Makes sense, but unfortunate for my son. He’s got it all but the test scores.
Hmm…I would have thought that the reason for the general scholarship app was to find students who don’t have free tuition but are able to somehow show themselves in the essays.
National merit already get basically a full ride and it is automatic, so I doubt they are in the running for the Engineering scholarships. This was one of the main reasons my son has decided to go to OleMiss was for the automatic scholarships for National Merit.
Back to the original post, I’ve wondered the same thing about an Ole Miss parent FB page. I haven’t been able to find anything. I love the Alabama parent FB page. It’s so helpful.
@crazy4info - I know it’s been helpful to me too. If I find anything I’ll post about it.
I have never been able to find a Parent FB page but I agree that the Tulane FB page has been beyond helpful and sad that Ole Miss doesn’t have something similar.
Just curious if anyone ever found an Ole Miss Parents Facebook page?
There isn’t one
