Facebook Question

I plan to work on Wall Street, do you think me not having a facebook will be a disadvantage to me?

Not if you keep it professional. I think that facebook can be a useful tool in establishing and maintaining important contacts.

I would advise on adding only people you know in real life as friends and strictly monitoring and limiting the amount of photos you post.

Dude, do you realize that 3 or 4 years ago, there was no facebook (at least i did not hear of it). Facebook is a piece of crap social network. In another 3 or 4 years some new gimmik might replace it.

^Leo, that’s what I was telling my friend! Haha. He gave me a guilt trip saying that Facebook is big and that you need it and blah blah blah.

I still have my Gmail account that I keep up to par.

hhaha. seriously, in about 2005, I had never heard of FB… myspace was the social network then… and before that was friendster. A question I think is valid: cellphone. not sure how old you are, but 5 years ago, cellphones were not … well i still don’t have a cellphone, niether does my dad. Not sure how many young people know this, but in about 1993, few people even knew what email was.

Yeah just keep it professional.

If you want professional, use the .edu email the college gave you

Leolibby, you give quite possibly the worst advice on these forums. As mentioned earlier Facebook is a tool to be used. It is not a gimmick and I have no idea why you think it is gimmick - the sheer number of users should prove otherwise especially when compared to other social networking sites.

If you are not using Facebook/Twitter/Blogs or whatever as a business tool you are disadvantaging yourself. Even the Nytimes has a Facebook / Twitter / Blog, along with many others.

I only called it a gimmick because it’s not permanent. People did just fine working on wall street before facebook, even before myspace… and ever before electricity. The reason MY times has a twitter/myspace… whatever is because those are public relation tools. Having a facebook will be a disadvantage because everyone has it. Think of something origional… All my friends don’t believe in even thinking about trying twitter, because it’s moronic and ■■■■■■■■.

sorry for the typos

Leolibby: So because the majority of the population has one, if one doesn’t have one then one will be at an advantage? There’s a huge gap in logic there. Maybe he should just get a Fetlife and meet people who are into BDSM instead, since that would be original and therefore an advantage.

Facebook has many functions. On my campus, we use it to announce events such as plays, parties, guest lectures, etc. I also use it to keep in touch with friends, family, and actually people who have offered me internships through my job on campus. Many major newspapers and politicians have facebooks. Don’t be so closed-minded.

Look at Facebook’s number of users. Also, well you already mentioned these but people said the same thing about cell phones and email and now you would never have a job on Wall Street without them.

You should really educate yourself on what you are talking about before you start giving others advice on the matter. Even so I am sure people stopped reading your post when you said you don’t own a cell phone. That is technophobia and my business professor has the perfect quote for people like you - “If you meet someone who doesn’t own a cell phone, RUN!”

Also, what does any of this have to do with originality? It is about networking, using Facebook (which has 500,000,000 users if you didn’t bother looking at the link I gave you) gives you the advantage of connecting with those people. Facebook is also at its peak and other social networking sites are growing alongside of it which should also be used by the clever entrepreneur.

“Everyone has it”
Exactly why it is beneficial; try looking at it from a business angle.

Using Facebook also shows that you are cognoscenti and that is very important in the ever advancing world.

“it’s moronic and ■■■■■■■■”
There are missing facts and ambiguity behind those words.

If you want to debate or something PM me :).

this is stupid, Facebook isn’t irrelevant but some people need to hop off Zuckerberg’s jock

But can you demonstrate how not having a facebook is a significate advantage to someone who works on wall street? A lot of factors are involved… There is a disadvantage to being on the grid (no privacy, identity theft, etc.) so far 4 people on cc have tried to steal my identity.

I’m sure they have.

tetrahedron summed it all up nicely. As I also said, it is how I keep in touch with possible employers I have met through my college.

and nobody in my family owns cell phones… except my brother.

Tetrahedron, I respect your input but can you tell me specifically how me not having a Facebook account is going to disadvantage me?

Personally, I can’t see how me not having a Facebook is going to disadvantage me compared to another person who does. Matter of fact, I think it would give me an advantage because you have people who work on Wall Street logging into their FB accounts every 5 minutes when they should be doing their jobs…

I think Facebook is overrated. I can’t see how one could compare emails and cellphones to Facebook at this stage. Myspace was once at the level of Facebook and look at it now…

Why do you even want a facebook? Because you actually sound as if you don’t want one.

Its and advantage for keeping touch with your friends and family mostly but its not a disadvantage in the Wall Street world. I think a real advantage for that woul be to get a LinkedIn

^^^

I don’t want a Facebook. I recently deleted my Facebook so I asked would I be disadvantaged on Wall Street for not having a Facebook account.

You’re ignorant if you think Facebook isn’t here to stay for a long time. Myspace never had the amount of users or the worth (50 billion) that Facebook has. This whole thread is like saying 15 years ago that Cell Phones are a fad and no one will use it in the future. Facebook is here to stay. It has too much of a grip on our society. But honestly, what else can you expect from a CCer? It’s not an advantage right now, but it will be one in the future.

Cool man. Way to live in the Stone Age. So you’re that one guy who when someone needs to call you and talk to you about something important, you don’t have a cell phone. And before you say the comeback you would of said, “Just call my house phone”, I’m going to say are you really home the whole day? If you are, that explains a lot about your social life and why you don’t have any type of social connectivity to this world.

I’m just saying that if you guys don’t want a Facebook, sure, whatever. But don’t diss the people who have one. Because obviously, the other 500,000,000 didn’t see it as a waste of time.
