When do we get our email addresses from Rice? I'm anxious to start a facebook. Thanks.

u can start one now..even if it is only high school facebook and all ur college friends will haze on u. but at least its easy to keep up with ppl and not too difficult to switch over once u get ur email

Technically you don't get it until O-week (I know, all your high school friends will already have theirs by then, but facebook really isn't that useful or fun until you get on campus and start meeting people.) Though near the end of the summer when they put the new class into the computer system you can sign up and get your email a few weeks early (this is what I did.)

Relax, facebook will have its hold on your life soon enough. There's no need to rush it.

You can get a NetID (the one-ID one-password system that covers things like email and campus computer access) before you come to Rice, but you need your student ID (it should be on your FinAid paperwork). However, since it's 1 May, and many people are still sending in their decisions to Rice, I'd guess that IT is nowhere near ready to start letting new students get NetIDs. The site to apply for one is http://apply.rice.edu, and you can always try and apply for an NetID now (assuming you have your student ID number), but I'd wait until June or July before you try and apply.

Also, one problem I had was that I was able to get an email address, but my NetID info didn't carry over to other campus services (such as computers), so I couldn't log in on machines in the campus labs. I'm pretty sure that was a byproduct of the fact that they were still setting up the NetID system when I applied last summer, and you shouldn't have to worry about it now, but if you do have trouble logging into machines once you get here, you'll have to stop by IT and have them make sure your login info carries over to systems like computer labs and network storage.

Don't get a high school facebook. It is not like you are going to be able to see people at rice because you can only view friends at different schools and that would mean that you have to start befriending all these strangers which would be weird and stupid.

Rice Information Technology told me this:

"The accounts are auto created as soon as we get the info from Banner.
This info normally comes to us around June or July but we have no
control over the time frame."

To give some idea of what Banner is, another university's website says, "We use Banner to perform the business and administrative tasks that support the mission of the university."

Don't hold your breath. Oh, and the longer you're not on college Facebook, the better. You will get sucked in.
