facebook

I am applying to college this fall, and I heard colleges are looking at your facebook. I know that myspace is public and can be easily searched but what about facebook? I have all my settings on private, but is it stilll possible for them to look? I really don't want to delete like half of my pictures lol..

bumppppp

someone please help?

No, if you keep it private, you'll be fine.

I think the whole idea that adcoms check myspace/facebook at all is just paranoia by applicants who think every aspect of the admissions process is stacked against them. It's not likely, really.

Facebook/Myspace-checking and Googling in general is usually done more during a job application than a college application. Can you imagine Harvard adcoms searching the Facebooks of every single person that applies?

But if it bothers you that much, make it private.

^ it could be legit. Facebook was created by a Harvard Undergraduate who initially created it as a social network only for Hardvard Undergrads/Grads. I wouldnt be suprised if (Harvard) did check your Facebook

^ which surely would be illegal if you had your profile set to private.

Um, I think it would be more likely for Zuckerberg to PREVENT Harvard from using it to screen students than to help them do it.

lol thanks everyone for the rather amusing but helpful comments

They have maybe 5 minutes to look through your application.

They're not going to waste that time looking for someone who either goes by a different name on facebook or might not even have one at all.

The only 'known' issues with facebooks had to do with tips people sent to the admissions office.

my friend was deferred from g-town, and wrote some things against g-town
then she was later accepted...

she got a letter saying that she was denied because of the comment that she made on her facebook before she was accepted..

i am not kidding. be careful

Most likely they will not look at your facebook. But still don't put anything that you wouldn't want them to see like drunk pictures or anything like that. Also i know some people change their name on facebook or just put first name last initial so that it is harder to find them. But if you are smart about your facebook you should be ok.

imbabo, your story sounds like one of those vague, shifty chain letters than get emailed around or reposted as bulletins on myspace. LOL

i've read several schools that state they will not browse social network sites for information on a student. do you really think they have time to do that anyways, after receiving thousands and thousands of applications every year?

if you are paranoid, like many said: just set your account to private.
