can we use our netid email accounts (though i read that those are temporary because they are not @northwestern.edu) to create facebook accounts?

If they are temporary, then I don't think you can create a northwestern account. If you don't know your email address, you can't establish a facebook account.

I've already modified mine, its short. I changed the first part from the netid to something I want and I dont have that whole thing after. I check my mail in outlook too.

You can use your netid email account to create a facebook account. That's what I did, and you can also modify it now so it's shorter (@northwestern.edu).

how do you change ur email ? mines an ugly netid@casbqah.nu.edu.. how do i change it to myname@northwestern.edu ??

I never had to change my address. I always log in through my netid to check emails and the first email described how my account is now activated and that my friends and family can email me at myname@northwestern.edu. So that's my email address, although I still log in each time with the netid.

Go to the NUIT page, where you can modify your e-mail address. I think some people never had to change their address because if northwestern already got your deposit, they change it for you.. or something like that.

where's the NUIT page? i'm sorry; i don't seem to be finding any of this.

can we not change our e-mail until northwestern receives our deposits? i just sent mine in today.

i havent changed my email yet, and i had no trouble signing up for thefacebook with my admitted student email address.

I got my facebook account with the crappy netID thing. But once NU got my deposit they sent me an email with my new email address, i.e. me@northwestern.edu

you still log in through casbah though. or whatever server you're on.

my account changed from netid@lulu.it.northwestern.edu to myname@northwestern.edu by itself. I think once NU knows you're enrolling, they'll change it for you.

Here is how it works.

You cannot use your original NetID at facebook because it is not @northwestern, but @server.northwestern.

Once your deposit is received, your NetID is emailed a message saying they have your money, and your email address is changed to initial-lastname@northwestern.edu. Then you can change THIS to whateveryouwant@northwestern.edu through the NUIT webpage. You cannot change anything before they change your NetID to your official email address, since they do not know if you are coming to NU or not.

Use your new NU address at the facebook. I changed mine to get rid of the dash, because it annoyed me.

It's ALWAYS going to be "netid@lulu.it.northwestern.edu" This is your real e-mail address because Lulu is the server that all your messages are on. It's just that "yourname@northwestern.edu" is pseudo e-mail address so you don't have that really long one to give out. But regardless of which one you use, it always goes back to "netid@server.it.northwestern.edu"

yeah, I was able to set up my facebook account while I was still using netid@server.northwestern.edu

are you saying now that we have our actual email addresses we can change them? not that I want to ... I actually got my full name (firstname-lastname@northwestern.edu). but maybe that's because my name is pretty short.

UC-Benz, when you become finally enrolled, your email address will shorten.

For example, I started out with "firstname-lastname@merle.it.northwestern.edu." Now it's "firstname-lastname@northwestern.edu."

t-tenisghs@merle.it.northwestern.edu
Now, it's t-tenisghs@northwestern.edu.

****this is not a real email address above but it's the format that's most important here.

No, it will technically always be the longer address; however, you won't see it that way.

In order for the mail to be sent to your inbox it needs to be stored on a POP3 server. They have 4 different POP3 servers: casbah, hecky, lulu, and merle. Each server is randomly given out (I assume) to a student/faculty member using the Northwestern e-mail service. In order for mail to be sent to you at your "name@northwestern.edu" address it needs to be stored on one of those servers. Your "@northwestern.edu" e-mail address is simply a pseudo-name because it doesn't have any physical significance whereas "@server.it.northwestern.edu" is an actual place. You can change the "@northwestern.edu" address any time you like if you want in the IT section, but the "netid@server.it.northwestern.edu" will always stay the same unless changed by the network administrator.

Once you get your @nu email, you can change it to whatever you want, Lilly. You could have underpants@northwestern.edu if it so pleased you.

I'm surprised the facebook worked with the server email; I tried mine and it didn't. Oh well.

how do u change the name@northwestern.edu email and where are the facebooks?

http://thefacebook.com -> it's like myspace but more useful and less homoerotic.

For editing your info: https://directory.northwestern.edu/edit/

Use your NetID to login. The "alias" feature is what is listed before @northwestern, so change it to whatever you want. Make sure NU has already activated your f-lastname@northwestern email address first, though.

UC_benz, what are you talking about? Are you telling me that as a CURRENT UPPERCLASSMAN that I have no idea what I'm saying? I have a northwestern account, and while it's in the MERLE server, by no means do I tell job recruiters and professors my email address is tenisghs@merle.it.northwestern.edu. My email address is simply tenisghs@northwestern.edu.
