Facts, Statistics, and Tips for applicants and relatives of applicants to Wesleyan

Hey, everyone! As a member of the Class of 2011, I've been learning more about Wesleyan throughout the summer. I thought that it might be helpful to share this information with all of you, especially with those considering Wesleyan.

FACTS/ STATISTICS

*Wesleyan University is a very diverse campus. People come from all over the world and from different backgrounds.

*Wesleyan University is strong not only in film, the humanities, and the arts, but also in the sciences.

*Wesleyan University's Class of 2011 has a "male-to-female" ratio of 49:51.

*Wesleyan University is a very liberal school, housing a wide variety of interests in its organizations, classes, and events.

*Wesleyan University, according to wikipedia.org, is similar to the universities comprising the Ivy League. It has the funding of a university, yet a smaller number of students. Also, it holds the prestige and selectivity often associated with the Ivy League, though it is less well-known.

*Wesleyan University, according to many people that I've spoken with, is a great place to form life-long friendships, especially with its open-minded student body. From my perspective, this is certainly true. The 2007-2008 academic year hasn't even started, and I'm already friends with a girl that I met through a Wesleyan meet-up.

*Wesleyan University is noted as one of the most selective universities in the nation, with an acceptance rate of 27% for the Class of 2011. Approximately 7750 applied, and 2123 were admitted.

TIPS

*Do not take Wesleyan University lightly. It is highly selective, and it's considered one of "The Little Three".

*Convey yourself clearly and effectively through your essays. Doing so can overshadow low test scores or anything else, and is valued highly in the admissions process.

*Take the most challenging courses in high school and work hard. The most important factor in Wesleyan's admissions process is the applicant's secondary school record, according to princetonreview.com.

*As with any school, if you feel that your scores are inadequate, take the SAT or ACT again. I do, however, advise that you take the SAT or ACT no more than two times.

*If you get to have an interview, speak confidently and sincerely about your academic and extracurricular interests (and how they relate to Wesleyan) and about why you are applying to Wesleyan. As Socrates once said, "Know thyself." Don't BS your way through the interview.

I hope that this thread helped! Good luck and have a great school year!
