FAFSA 2010-2011 application?

If I apply on January 2010 for the FAFSA 2010-2011 application what tax return year do I have to use for my parents 2008 or 2009 return I register right on 1 January 2010.

You use your final pay stubs from 2009 (if available), and data from your 2008 return and submit it as an estimate. When you have the 2009 figures, you return to FAFSA, enter the updated numbers, and then forward those figures to the colleges you are interested in.

Almost everyone has to do it that way.

I just updated my FAFSA numbers today on the website. What do you mean by “then forward those figures to the colleges you are interested in?” How is this forwarding handled? Through the FAFSA website?

^Answered my own question by going on the FAFSA website. “All schools listed on your SAR will also receive the updated SAR information as soon as it is processed.” So nothing more to be done by me.

I have a question: if I am not attending college until the winter of 2010, can I reapply for aid on January 1st, 2010? I made too much money in 2008, so 2009-2010 app useless, but 2010-2011 (accelerated program years I will attend school anyway) will have better results because I made very little money in 2009. And is there a form that cuts out 2009? Or one specifically for my circumstance, that actually asks how much I made in 2009?

You *have *to reapply for aid every year. School in the fall of 2010 would be part of the 2010-2011 school year and would require the 2010-2011 FAFSA (available Jan 1st), which would require 2009 tax information.

I don’t know what this means.

Sorry: I mean, a form that is just for 2010 (some sort of corrections form)? I don’t need $ for 2009 at all. (Not a very important question)

The 2009-2010 form is just for the 2009-2010 school year. The 2010-2011 form will just be for the 2010-2011 school year. It is not a corrections form, it is a new application for each year and you have to redo the financial information. You can carry forward the personal information so you don’t have to reenter it every time.

If you’re starting in January 2010, then you would file the current 09/10 FAFSA which is based on 2008 income. There is no getting around that.

If you’re starting in Sept 2010, or January 2011, you will file the 10/11 FAFSA which is available in January. That will be based on 2009 income.

Financial aid is based on a school year (generally fall through summer), not a calendar year. There is always a one calendar year “lookback” on income information for FAFSA.

On the 2009-2010 FAFSA form they ask if you were born before January 1st, 1986 in order to qualify as an Independent student. Does anyone have any idea what the month it will be on the FAFSA form for the winter session of 2010?

I was born in the month of June, 1986 and hoping to be qualified as Independent for the Winter session.

FAFSA works for the entire school year. On the 2010-2011 FAFSA the date will be ‘before January 1st 1987’. So for the 2010-2011 school year you will be independent if you were born in June 1986.

For the 2009-2010 school year you will be a dependent for the entire school year (through summer 2010 generally).

So if my son is starting college in the fall of 2011, I need to be using my 2010 info for the FAFSA, starting out with the last pay stub of the year and finishing it off when I’ve filed my return?

My birthday is September 11, 1987. My school generally starts in late September so I will be 24-years-old before the 2011-2012 school year even starts, yet I still must apply as a dependent student?

WHere do you get that idea? For FAFSA it has nothing to do with when your school starts. Only with when your birthdate is and which school year you are applying for aid for.

For the 2010-2011 school year (the current one) the relevant FAFSA is the 2010-2011 FAFSA. On the 2010-2011 FAFSA students born before January 1st 1987 are independent.

For the 2011-2012 school year (the next one) the relevant FAFSA will be the 2011-2012 FAFSA. On that FAFSA the question will change so that students born before January 1st 1988 will be independent. That FAFSA is not available until January 1st 2011.

So with a birthdate of Sept 11, 1987 you are a dependent for the entire 2010-2011 school year. But you will be independent for the entire 2011-2012 school year. (for FAFSA).
