fafsa #84 & #86

Appreciate advice on two questions:
1, #84 dislocated worker. If employment contract expired and not renewed, does that qualify as dislocated worker?
2. #86. Fafsa asks for parents income tax. Refers to line 56 of 1040. But that line on 2013 1040 is self employment tax, not income tax.

Thanks!

For number 2…the numbers refer to the 2014 income tax form.

Number 1…is the parent currently unemployed? Or is the parent self employed and the current contract ended. There is a difference.

Dislocated worker? If not working in your job.

You are using a 2013 tax form. There are different line numbers on 2014 forms. If it asks for income, fill in income.

Hi, don’t mean to thread jack but seeing as there is a question about FAFSA Q84, I would like to ask it here. If my parent was receiving unemployment benefits but no longer receives them and is still unemployed (due to termination from a job), would she be considered a dislocated worker?

I would say yes. Dislocated worker is generally someone who has been laid off.

Thank you. I hadn’t yet tackled 2014 taxes and was working off 2013.

Bengel…it sounds like this person was not laid off from a job…but rather is a self employed person who works from contract to contract, and is between contracts right now.

I’m not sure that qualifies for dislocated worker status…@kelsmom. Hope she sees this.

Someone who is self-employed can be considered dislocated if unemployed due to economic conditions or a natural disaster. The FAFSA doesn’t go into much more detail. If the parent can explain that he/she anticipates being out of work due to the economy, then dislocated would likely apply. However if the parent anticipates a new contract being signed in the near future, then dislocated doesn’t seem to be the most accurate status.

The school may require a written detailed explanation of the situation to verify this if the parent does define him or her as a dislocated worker.

Agreed.
