FAFSA : Adding Dad makes 3 ?

Dad decides to go to college . We already did FAFSAs for one current college -going D , one prospective college S in January . In the question " how many will be attending college ? " in their FAFSAs as dependents , we put TWO.

Now Dad does his FAFSA as an independent student , the question is there " how many will be attending ? " - he puts THREE ( including himself ) .

Knowing that there is this rule about parents outting down themselves as a college student , will this mess things up for all the FAFSAs ?

Do they look at these things as one family " grouping " or independently ???

you have it correctly -- Dad will put 3 on his FAFSA, but each of the kids will still put 2. Parents do not count as "currently attending college" for the kids FAFSA. Some colleges will take it into account on a case by case basis,so you may want to let them know.
